Get Your Bike Ready in Advance of Bike to Work Week

Bike to Work Week is just around the corner and residents are reminded to get their bike tune ups before the week begins.

The week runs from May 25th to 30th and riders can sign up as a team, school or individual online at smarttrips.ca. Last year more than 1,560 riders participated in Bike to Work Week across the Okanagan, with 499 riders taking part for the first time. To celebrate the week, Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran showed off his bike that he will be using to get to and from work.

“The more people we have on bikes the less people we have in cars,” said Basran. “We just found out in our most recent citizen survey that traffic is one of the biggest issues or concerns amongst all of our residents. Getting on a bike means fewer cars on the road and alleviates traffic concerns that people have in our community.”

Residents are encouraged to take part in Bike to Work Week and can do so by taking advantage of three Kelowna Cycle stations. A satellite station will be set up on Monday, May 25th from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. at Kelowna Cycle on Pandosy, and another station will be set up on Wednesday, May 27th also from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. at The HUB on Sutherland Avenue. A celebration station will be set up on Friday, May 29th from 6:30 until 8:45 a.m. at Urban Fare on Pandosy.

“The time to get your bike tuned up is not Monday morning, it’s time to get it tuned up this week or this weekend so you can ride every day for Bike to Work Week,” adds Basran. “That’s really important to do ahead of the week.”

A number of celebrations stations will be set up during Bike to Work Week at various locations around the Central Okanagan. To learn more about the week or to sign up visit Smarttrips.ca.
