Kelowna Expected to Get a Lowe's Home Improvement Store

A new home improvement store is expected to open up in Kelowna.

On Monday, City Staff requested Kelowna Council’s approval for a development permit application, so that KWA Site Development Consulting Ltd could construct a Lowe’s home improvement store.

The proposed 107,000 square foot warehouse sales building and associated 15,000 square foot garden centre will be located on 2076 Enterprise Way, replacing the old Western Star Trucking warehouse building.

KWA Site Development Consulting Ltd will see the building razed, constructing the Lowe’s building in its place. After the project is completed, the property owner intends to subdivide the property and develop the vacant land south of the new building.

Development of the project will include a total of 351 parking spaces and two bike parking stations. In addition, developers will implement a cycle lane for public use between the corridor to the north and Enterprise way to the south. This path will tie into a temporary gravel trail through the undeveloped portion of the property to provide access to Enterprise.

“This is certainly the end of an era with the Western Star building coming down and development going up in its place, but a lot has happened in our community in that time, so it’s nice to see some new progress on that site,” said Mayor Colin Basran.

“I’m really happy to see this come forward,” said Councillor Tracy Gray. “We’re going to be employing a lot of people and I really appreciate the care and attention [the developers] have put into the landscaping and cycle paths.”

The proposed Lowe’s building is not a green building, and does not achieve any environmental building standard; however, the proponent has designed bio-swales to manage stormwater run-off.

Council approved the development permit for the proposed Lowe’s building. Moving forward, developers are required to seek approval from the Ministry of Transportation. Should developers be given the green light, the Lowe's Kelowna location will be the second shop in British Columbia.
