An additional $450,000 is required to install a centrifuge system at the Brandt’s Creek Trade Waste Treatment Facility in order to alleviate costs and efficiently manage the volume of bio-solids leaving the facility.
On Monday, Kelowna City Council approved an amendment to the 2015 Financial Plan to include $450,000 for the project.
Brandt’s Creek is located on Ethel Street and Weddell Place, and it provides waste water treatment for the fruit and wine waste flowing from SunRype and Andrew Peller Ltd.
Although utilized by SunRype and Andrew Peller Ltd, the treatment facility is owned and operated by the City of Kelowna on behalf of the aforementioned industries. However, the industries are responsible for all capital and operating costs of the treatment facility.
The centrifuge is necessary in order to reduce the volume of bio-solids leaving the facility and to reduce the costs associated with hauling the bio-solids out.
SunRype and Andrew Peller Ltd. have budgeted $450,000 for this project and the centrifuge has been paid for by SunRype at a cost of approximately $274,000. The remaining $176,000 is estimated to pay for the permanent installation of the centrifuge and additional equipment.
With Council’s approval of the budget amendment for this project, ownership of the centrifuge will be transferred to the City of Kelowna.
