Telus donates $30K to KGH baby unit

Newborns in Kelowna are getting a little boost thanks to a donation from Telus to the Kelowna General Hospital’s Giving Giggles campaign.

They presented the gift to the KGH Foundation on Wednesday, which will go towards the purchase of brand new medical equipment and patient care items for KGH’s new perinatal unit.

“It was very important to us to know that this gift would have a real impact in the community in which we live and, together without our customers, support the growth and development of our region’s littlest patients,” said Steve Jenkins, Telus General Manager for the Okanagan, in a statement.

The new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at KGH can support babies as young as 30 weeks. State-of-the-art equipment in the unit can be the difference between life and death for sick newborns and before it was up and running, many Okanagan families had to travel to Vancouver for specialized care.

The donation will go towards the KGH Foundation goal of raising $3 million dollars to support the advanced equipment and care needs of the new perinatal unit and NICU.

For the donation, Telus put together $25 from every new Fibre Optik TV and Mobility activation in Kelowna and West Kelowna this past March and April.

“We are incredibly grateful for this gift,” said Siobhan McManus, Senior Development Officer for the KGH Foundation. “Telus has been so generous in their support of the perinatal campaign.

“We literally could not achieve our goal without corporate donors like Telus.”
