(UPDATE: Sept. 5 @ 8:40 am) – The Kelowna Fire Department (KFD) is now investigating the cause of a fire on Chute Lake Road that was reported by a member of the public.
At about 10:30 pm on Sunday, the department received reports of a vehicle fire that was spreading into the brush off the side of the road.
The fire was outside of city limits but KFD responded with two bush trucks and a water tender at the request of the BC Wildfire Service.
“Water had to be shuttled to the incident from a water tender truck due to the rough nature of the road,” says Micah Volk with the KFD.
The fire was contained to just under an acre in size and no injuries were reported.
The KFD thanks the public for the prompt reporting of this fire and reminds anyone who sees a wild fire to call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a cell phone to report it.
(Original story: Sept. 4 @ 8:40 am) – A Kelowna resident says they found a vehicle fire on Chute Lake Road late Sunday night.
A KelownaNow reader says they found the fire at about 10 pm after hearing people arguing down the road.
The reader says they could also see a small fire on the road and could hear explosions a short while later.
Afraid that their exit route would become blocked, the witness said they quickly headed down the road and came upon a Mitsubishi SUV on fire off the side of the road.
Pictures show the fire burning close to a patch of trees and brush.
“I called 911 and they said it's not Kelowna fire department territory. They patched me through to BC wildfire,” the man tells KelownaNow.
The man also called the RCMP and the Kelowna Fire Department reportedly sent out two bush trucks to tackle the fire.
The Kelowna RCMP and fire department have not released any information about the incident at this time, but NowMedia staff have reached out for more information.
