It was an impressive turnout at the Fresh Air Kelowna Cherry Blossom Triathlon this past weekend as hundreds of athletes of all skill levels gathered to swim, bike and run.
The triathlon first started in 2014 and attracts competitors from across the province for the various race distances it offers, including the newly added youth super sprint.
“The kids 12 to 16 kicked it off, which was really fun to see,” said race director Cory Krist.
Utilizing the H20 Adventure and Fitness Centre, participants completed their swim indoors and then biked in a loop along Gordon Drive, over to Swamp Road via Casorso Road and back.
Participants then transitioned off their bikes and into their running shoes, running along a course centred around Mission Recreation Park before crossing the finish line in front of friends, family and various groups cheering for everyone.
“Seeing everybody come together and challenge themselves and celebrate those successes,” said Krist on what he enjoys most about race day.
“Seeing the families race together, it's really the participants on the day that make it all worthwhile.”
Unlike some races that have not returned since the COVID-19 pandemic, Krist explained the Cherry Blossom Triathlon has rebounded and that this year was the “biggest event” they’ve had.
“It's grown ever since, we're about 100 athletes up over what we did last year, which is fantastic,” said Krist.
“The support from athletes/participants coming to race (and) the volunteers have been amazing, sponsors have been amazing so it's been a good year.”
