A pair of Kelowna water polo athletes will soon be heading to Quebec to take on the country’s best in their sport after securing a bronze medal at the 17U Western Championships last month.
Octavio Macedo and Mason Baughen helped the Pacific Storm to an 8-7 victory over Team Saskatoon.
The match saw the Storm take an early lead, but Team Saskatoon clawed away at the score to tie the match in the second quarter.
With 40 seconds left in the game, the Storm broke away to score the game-winner and secure a bronze medal.
"The tournament wasn't the best for us, but the boys played well when it mattered. Our team showed character and responded under pressure,” said head coach coach Nikola Maric.
“Octavio, returning from injury, and Mason, coming off the bench, had a huge impact. I am happy and grateful that they are with us."
The squad will now turn their focus to nationals, which are being held in Montreal at the end of May.
Before nationals, the Kelowna duo will help their local team compete at a community tournament and then continue their training with the Storm.
“The success at the Western Championships is a testament to the talent and dedication of these young athletes,” wrote the Kelowna Water Polo Club.
“And it serves as an inspiration for their club as they continue to develop and compete at the highest levels.”
