(UPDATE: Aug. 1 @ 1:30 pm) - The boat launch at Paddlewheel Park has reopened, but the nearby tennis courts remain closed.
(Original story: Aug. 1 @ 1:05 pm) - Vernon Fire Rescue Services is responding to a boat fire at Paddlewheel Park.
As a result, the park’s boat launch is temporarily closed and the public is being asked to avoid the area to give emergency personnel the access they need.
The first report of the dry-docked boat on fire in the corner of Paddlewheel Park came into VFRS around noon and crews arrived on scene to find a single boat fully engulfed in flames.
There was concern with possible exposure to nearby trees, but firefighters have since been able to contain the blaze and prevent it from extending into the park.
The fire, which produced thick black smoke that has been visible to the surrounding areas, is currently being knocked down, a release from VFRS explained.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection to the fire. The cause is unknown at this time.
