It’s About Time Canada Steps into the Movie Spotlight, Fellow Canucks Need Your Support

We support our Canadian hockey teams, why can’t we support our Canadian film industry?

In a conversation with Marketing and Social Media Coordinator Keelan Filtness, he posed the above mentioned question as he discussed the difficulties of breaking into the Canadian film industry.

With our overwhelmingly influential partners to the south, the glitz and the glamour of Hollywood more often than not overshadow our talent in the Great White North.

When`s the last time you heard about a mainstream, great quality Canadian film?

Of course there are hundreds of fantastic Canadian films, but nobody knows about them, added Filtness.

CineCoup is a Canada-wide indie film making competition where aspiring producers and creative minds are put to the ultimate test: can they design a fantastic film that will captivate audiences across the nation?

The competition is based on votes. Fans can logon to the CineCoup website and checkout all the different movie trailers, voting for their favourite ones.

At least 75 different films are in the running for the claim to fame: a million dollar prize to put toward a full-length feature film that will be released across Canada and maybe internationally.

Based out of Vancouver, Filtness and his crews are working hard to garner fans and spark a laugh with their action/comedy flick, the Goons.

It’s a tale of your average Joes claiming their spot in the lime light; the underdogs finally becoming the heroes.

The film is based on the three boys—the Brains, the Brawn, and the Blue—each who have their own interesting and unique personality.

These Goons have a run in with the law, as they blindly try to save their beloved mom from jail. But little do they know, mother dearest is actually the ring leader for a huge crime operation.

“It’s just a hilariously goofy movie,” said Filtness.

Checkout the Goon's movie trailer here, but viewer discretion is advised, as the clip does contain a bit of profanity.

Right here in Kelowna, we have our very own aspiring film makers with their production of Checked In.

In this film, a man is forced to confront the mistakes he has made in life while navigating his own personal purgatory hotel.

In supporting your fellow Canucks in their film making endeavours, it’s important to logon to CineCoup and vote. Voting and supporting Canadians will give them a chance to make a career in the Canadian film industry.

“No one does this for money,” said Filtness “It’s for the love of making films and the chance to really go somewhere in this industry. It really is for Canadians, such a good chance to get exposure.”

As of Wednesday, there are five days of voting left until the competition is narrowed down to the top 50 films.

Judging for the top spot is expected to commence around early May, and the top 15 will be decided on May 4th.

On a side note, the more active you are on the CineCoup website, the more votes you can put towards your favourite Canadian film makers.

“Projects such as CineCoup help to create and facilitate jobs here in Canada, as well as promote some national film pride,” added Filtness. “So let’s get out there and vote to support the Canadian film industry.”
