Massive Wildfire Near Prince George Prompts Evacuation Order

UPDATE (10:15 am): The evacuation alert has been extended due to the threat of the wildfire burning near Prince George. The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has issued an evacuation alert for the areas around Bednesti Lake, Berman Lake, and Dahl Lake Road. Residents in the area are asked to prepare themselves in the event that an evacuation is required and immediately take actions to help prevent damage to their homes.

The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch is battling a massive wildfire near Prince George that has prompted an evacuation.

The fire is three kilometres south of Norman Lake and about 50 kilometres southwest of Prince George. The wildfire is estimated to be 2,500 hectares in size and there are currently 26 firefighters, two helicopters, and support personnel on site. Approximately 80 residents south of Norman Lake have been evacuated by the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako. Evacuees are being asked to register at the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George Office in Prince George.

“Safety is our number one priority and personnel and air resources are only being used in areas where it is safe for them to work. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it is suspected to be human-caused,” said Fire Information Officer Jillian Kelsh.

Smoke from the fire can be seen from Highway 16 and in surrounding communities. An Evacuation Order has been put in place for the residents of Little Bobtail Lake and Naltesby Lake.

The fire was discovered on Saturday, May 9th.
