Fire crews are responding to 15 new fires in the Prince George Fire Centre caused by lightning Thursday.

All of the fires are burning in the northern portion of the fire centre.

The largest of these fires is burning in the Fort Nelson Fire Zone, and is reported at 200 hectares in size.

“We have some that are in modified response, so we are just watching them. We also have quite a few of those fires that have crews on them and are getting action,” said Jillian Kelsh, Fire Information Officer for the Prince George Fire Centre. “We used a lot of air tankers yesterday and we have air support again today just to help any fires that are in close proximity to towns or any values.”

The Prince George Fire Centre has responded to 29 new fires since Tuesday, and all of them were caused by lightning.

Of the 183 fires registered in the Prince George Fire Centre this year, 124 have been lightning caused, which is more than usual for June. Lightning is often seen in July and August, but the ground isn’t normally as dry in June as it is this year.

As the Canada Day celebrations approach, fire personnel hope people will be responsible with their fire use.

“We’re just hoping people are diligent with their fire use as we are heading into a hot and dry spell,” Kelsh said. “If they spot a fire, call it in to us as soon as possible.”

To report smoke, flames, or an unattended campfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a cellphone.
