A pair of major BC Interior highways are open this morning after spending a portion of the night shut down.
DriveBC says the Okanagan Connector (Hwy 97C) fully reopened around 2 am following a closure of the westbound lanes beginning late Thursday night.
Hwy 1 closed in the Field area shortly after midnight, but has been open to single-lane alternating traffic since around 2:45 am.
Both closures were due to “vehicle incidents,” DriveBC explained, and motorists took to the Coquihalla Road Reports Facebook group to describe the conditions on Hwy 97C.
“Some of the worst road conditions we have ever driven,” said Katie Hoogkamp. “Sheer ice, people sliding downhill into (the) ditch.”
“It’s an ice rink,” added Angelo Stradiotto. “I was going slower than I have ever been down that hill. Be careful.”
The inclement weather came in quick Thursday night, as others reported driving through in the early evening with no issues.
DriveBC webcams show that conditions still look slick at high elevations this morning and motorists should exercise caution while driving these routes today.
