Both the men's and the women's Heat basketball teams couldn't quite beat the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford Friday night.
The women's team suffered a close loss, 70-67 to the hosting Cascades. Fraser Valley took the first quarter, at one point leading by 11 points to finish it off 19-13. The Heat didn't take that sitting down, however, coming back in the second 24-16. The UBC Okanagan women finished the second with an 11-4 run, seizing a 37-35 lead going into halftime.

Though the Heat were able to stretch their lead to 49-39 partway through the third, the Cascades came back with an 11-0 to push themselves ahead. The fourth quarter was a close one, with a tied score no less than three times in the early minutes. However, an 8-0 spurt from Fraser Valley gave them a 68-60 lead with less than four minutes left. The Heat scored the next seven points for a comeback, but some more offense from the Cascades and a missed final three-pointer left UBC Okanagan three behind with 70-67.
Jessica Jazdarehee led the Heat with 17 points, with Sarah Allison in second with 15. Second year guard Olivia Johnson was the player of the night with some standout defense coupled with two early baskets and six points. After the loss, the Heat are 4-9 for the season while the Cascades improved to 7-6.

The Heat men faced some similar challenges, falling 73-66 to the undefeated Cascades. The Cascades built a 17-14 lead in the first quarter, stretching this to a 15-point gap in the second. The Heat fought back to close it at 39-30 at halftime, however, and opened up the third with some excellent scoring form Dave Manshreck and Mitch Goodwin.
There, however, the game got away from them with the Cascades making a 22-5 run, bumping up their lead from four points to 21. They couldn't keep up the pace in the fourth frame, making only 11 points while the Heat charged back with 23 points. However, it wasn't enough and the Heat were beaten 73-66.
Aldrich Berriors had a game-high of 17 points, with 15 of these from three pointers in the final ten minutes. Meanwhile, Manshreck scored 16 points and led the team with seven rebounds. As a result of the game, the Heat fell to 2-11 for the season while the hosting Cascades bumped up their record to 13-0.
The Heat will face off against the Cascades once again on Saturday night in Abbotsford.
