The Heat men's basketball team managed to split the weekend with their valley rivals, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, while the women suffered another loss.

The Heat men held their own through the first two quarters, outscoring the WolfPack 19-12 and 18-17. The game was up and down all night, with some solid shooting from both teams to keep it pretty even. The WolfPack took the third quarter by a slim 20-19, leaving the Heat still leading.

With only three minutes left in the game, the Heat were up by 15 points and looked ready to close out Thompson Rivers. However, the WolfPack came back with some quick veteran plays for an 11-4 run. The Heat made a couple timely rebounds in the last two minutes along with a few free throws to finish off the game 84-75.

Third-year guard Mitch Goodwin was the Heat's player of the night with a season-high of 25 points paired with five assists. Buzz Truss also did a lot of dirty work with three timely charges and a couple of rebounds at the end to help UBC Okanagan secure the win. Aldrich Berrios had 21 points, as did David Manshreck.

This victory is the Heat men's team's first since November 21st and their third overall. “We have been a bit down on ourselves the past few weeks … but the young guys really showed how mature they are with how hard they competed tonight,” said Goodwin, the one third-year on a very young team. “I would say that we’ve come a long way since September. I’ve witnessed all of them grow on and off the court and tonight we showed just how far we’ve come as a team.”

The Heat advanced to 3-13 with the win, while the WolfPack fell to 9-7.

The Heat women missed their second chance in a row to steal a win of the WolfPack, losing 61-47 to Thompson Rivers. The scoring went back and forth between the two teams, with the Heat taking the first quarter 17-14 only to lose the second 17-8 to the WolfPack. The Heat picked their momentum up again in the third, outscoring Thompson Rivers 16-8.

The WolfPack were leading 41-39 going into the fourth when they picked up their offense to take the frame 22-6, sweeping the weekend. The Haeat's Sarah Allison had a team-high of 13 points with four rebounds and three assists. Shennelle Tamminen had 10 points. This game brought the Heat down to 4-12, while the WolfPack improved to 15-1.

Thompson Rivers University has now gotten the President's Cup back from UBC Okanagan, the annual award between the two universities that's based on wins across all varsity sports. The WolfPack won 4-3 in the women's category and took home both the men's and women's cup for the first time since 2002.

The Heat basketball teams will be going to MacEwan next weekend for their final match-ups of the year.
