AquaJets Take Home the Gold at Western Open

It has been a busy two weeks for the Kelowna AquaJet’s as swimmers travelled up to Edmonton for the Western Canadian Open. The competition included more than 500 swimmers from over 60 clubs from Ontario to B.C. and offered final preparation for swimmers as championship meets are coming up. Emily Epp and Josh Zakala represented the AquaJets with pride, posting 13 best times, eight club records, four gold, one silver, one bronze and nine top 10 finishes enroute to placing 28th as a team.

Highlights from the weekend included medal performances by Zakala in the 200 and 400 IM and 100 and 200 Back as well as the 800 Free and 100 Free. Zakala broke eight club records at the meet in the 15-17 and Mens categories, starting with lowering his own marks from last season in the 100 and 200 Back to 58.84 and 2:05.71.He took home a total of four gold medals. Epp showed no nerves and swam to tenth place in the 800 Free dropping 13 seconds off her best time. Epp also made a B final in the 400 Free placing 19th in a nine second best time, as well as finishing 30th in her 200 Breast.

“I feel Josh and Emily did a great job responding to the demands and pressure of the meet, resulting in some impressive swims,” said Head Coach Peter Wilkins.

Next up for the AquaJets is the VKSC Winter Splash which will take place on March 1st, then the SwimBC AAA Championships from March 5th to 7th.
