'Crippling and Potentially Historic' Blizzard About to Hit New York

Snow Day in #NYC.

NYC residents should be taking cover—there's a storm brewing.

A blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, saying that the area around New York City's about to be hit hard with heavy and blowing snow in blizzard conditions. The amount of snow expected to accumulate is 18 to 24 inches in New Jersey and Orange County, while other areas are expecting to get 20 to 30 inches—well over two feet.

Light snow is supposed to start Monday morning, just as people are getting to work, with about one to three inches by the evening rush. Monday evening, however, the storm is supposed to pick up, with the worst blizzard conditions from midnight Monday night into Tuesday afternoon.

Officials warn that gusts could get up to 55 to 65 mph in some areas, especially across eastern Long Island. All the blowing snow could lead to whiteout conditions, and the National Weather Service is warning residents not to travel. If they must, they're asked to have a winter survival kit with them

The warning calls this blizzard “crippling and potentially historic”, and snowfall rates are expected to be two to four inches per hour at some points. The National Weather Service notes that there could be moderate coastal flooding as a result of this powerful nor-easter as well.

While Kelowna had its own big storm earlier this month, we received only 33 cm, which is roughly 13 inches.
