Kelowna’s best campground getaways

Back in April, we reached out to our readers for help in naming the best of the best people, places and businesses in Kelowna.

In May, we tallied your nominations and came up with a list for you to vote for your favourites in each category.

In June, we counted the votes and celebrated those who reached the podium at our Best of Kelowna party.

Now, we want to celebrate Best Of Kelowna year-round!

This bi-weekly series will showcase the top three winners of select categories and give you some facts about them to help you gain familiarity with who Kelowna voted as the top dogs in their respective fields.

Best of Kelowna: Campgrounds

With that cool, fall air comes the natural instinct to curl up inside and settle in for the long winter ahead, but there’s still so much to experience outside this year! Living in Kelowna, we are fortunate enough to be surrounded by stunning natural environments to explore, and fall is the time to get out there.

There’s really nothing like a weekend spent camping, away from the stress and demands of everyday life. Especially with the campfire ban now lifted, it’s time to grab those marshmallows and head into the beauty that surrounds us on every side.

Make the most of the last bit of camping season and check out Kelowna’s top three campgrounds, as voted by you.

Gold: Bear Creek Provincial Park

One of the staples of Kelowna, Bear Creek Provincial Park is located on the west side of Okanagan Lake. Lakeside camping with a backyard full of stunning trails, this family-oriented park is extremely popular during the summer. While you’re there, be sure to head out for a hike up the Bear Creek Canyon Trail for beautiful views of Kelowna and a waterfall!

The park includes a day use area, drinking water, flush and pit toilets, showers, firepits, a playground and endless recreational activities. Reservations are recommended.

Silver: Mabel Lake Provincial Campground

A bit of a road trip from Kelowna, Mabel Lake Provincial Campground offers a quiet oasis well off the beaten path. Nestled into the mountains just past Lumby, the 35 km long lake is a fisherman’s paradise with sandy beaches and lush forests.

This park includes group camping, a day use area, drinking water, sani-station, firepits, a playground and a boat launch. All vehicle access sites are first come, first serve.

Bronze: Fintry Provincial Park

Located down the beautiful Westside Road, Fintry Provincial Park has it all. More than just a campground, this park includes the Fintry Farms Heritage Site with the original Manor House, a large barn and several other farm buildings.

Summer 2017 heading out strong 👌🏼

There is a stunning hike along Shorts Creek, with stairs taking you up through the canyon to a series of waterfalls. The campground is set right on the lake, with easy access for kayaking, canoeing and fishing.

This park includes a boat launch, group camping, picnic areas, pit or flush toilets, a playground and showers.
