SD23’s deputy superintendent honoured with UBC Alumni Builder Award

One of the key cogs in the Central Okanagan Public Schools (SD23) system has been recognized by her alma mater.

Terry-Lee Beaudry, a UBC graduate in 1981, received the 2024 UBC Alumni Builder Award earlier this week.

Beaudry currently serves as the deputy superintendent for SD23.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this award on behalf of the many colleagues at the District and university level who have had a hand in strengthening our current SD23/Okanagan School of Education partnership and who remain committed to building reconciliation practices in education for the betterment of our children and communities,” Beaudry said.

"It continues to be an absolute privilege and pleasure to collaborate with exceptional teachers, support staff, educational leaders, community members and university faculty to create equitable opportunities while transforming learning in schools."

A UBC release explains that Beaudry’s passion for pursuing a career in education stemmed from her mother, Frances Rivard Klassen, who was a residential school survivor.

“Her mother’s experiences with the education system fueled Beaudry’s passion for ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and receive a quality education,” the release explained.

Her career began shortly after graduating from UBC, as a teacher in the SD23 system in 1981.

Since then, she has climbed the ranks as a vice-principal, principal, director of instruction, assistant superintendent and, now, a deputy superintendent.

“There is always work to do, but I’ve witnessed profound growth in deepening student learning over the years,” she added.

UBC says her efforts over the years have helped foster a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture, history and traditions among aspiring educators.

The university’s Alumni Builder Award recognizes a cross-section of alumni who have significantly contributed to the school and enriched the lives of others.
