Embracing 50 And Learning From Youth and Seniors

This is the year that I turn 50, and I have to say I am excited! I didn’t do well at 40, so I am doing what I can to embrace the BIG 50! It’s funny, every one reacts differently around these pivotal moments in life.

I think being a “boomer” is exciting; I had the pleasure of participating in a session with Dr. Mary Ann Murphy. She is the Associate Professor for Cross-Appointment on Aging, and School of Social Work & Department of Sociology at UBC – Okanagan Campus. This lady has extensive knowledge when it comes to boomers and seniors, but more importantly, she is “passionate” about that age group. She was explaining to us the differences between boomers and seniors and the information was very enlightening.

Did you realize that as a boomer we have the best of both worlds? We have learned a lot from our parents and grandparents and now, with technology, our children are also showing us a few things. We have seniors with knowledge, wisdom and know-how and youth who are willing to take risks, make things happen and embrace change. We, as boomers, have the potential to discover and embrace it all!

I am a firm believer that we all need to listen, observe, process more, and talk less. In the past, we were taught to listen to our elders and teach the children; I now see a shift in thinking and it’s effective. The world is an exceptional place to be and if you’re willing to be proactive and take the time to learn from those around you, you will be steps ahead of those who live under a rock.

As my 50th gets closer, I find that I am hungry for life, learning and experiences. I want to take a leap out of my comfort zone and see where it takes me. I would love to be able to hit 60 and say, “Wow! Those last 10 years were astounding!” I invite you to share your experiences with me on when you turned 50. I think my readers would benefit from your wisdom, knowledge and “Aha!” moments. The other thing is that your turning 50 stories may generate a good old fashion belly laugh if nothing else!
