Wedding Style Tips for Women

I think it’s safe to say that wedding season has officially begun! As wedding trends change and evolve, so too do the rules for what is appropriate to wear when attending a wedding. Here are a few general rules, outfit suggestions, and wedding appropriate dresses you can find online.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t even think about wearing white, cream or ivory unless the bride has specified that she is not wearing a traditional coloured wedding dress. Even if you don’t think the dress looks like something a bride would wear, it’s just bad manners to wear anything in the bridal colour range.
  • Nothing too short, tight, or see-through, and try to keep the cut outs minimal. Basically just try to remember that you are not going out to da club.
  • Try to stay away from anything with a really loud print. If you want to go for a bold colour, stick to a solid colour or a very simple print. If you want to wear a patterned dress, stick to a pastel or neutral colour. You can still look nice without drawing too much attention to yourself.
  • This is a good rule for everyday style as well: no bra straps or clasps showing. Go for a strapless bra or some of those stick on cups. A bra strap showing always looks tacky, and that’s not how you want to look at a wedding.
  • Wearing a black dress is okay, but don’t do head to toe black. Dress it up with coloured accessories.
  • Don’t do sequins for a daytime wedding, they are only appropriate at a more formal nighttime wedding.

For a Casual Daytime Wedding:

A flowy maxi skirt and a simple tank top are perfect for a casual, outdoor wedding. It’s fun and simple and still looks put together if you add more formal accessories, like helps and a nice clutch.

For a Casual Evening Wedding:

A simple cocktail dress is perfect for a more casual evening wedding. Think light fabrics like chiffon, and a knee length cut. High-Low dresses are perfect for this occasion too.

For a Formal Daytime Wedding:

A mid-length dress is a good choice for a more formal daytime wedding, but go for a style that has a little more structure and looks polished. Floral prints are a good choice for most weddings.

For a Formal Evening Wedding:

A maxi dress is a great pick for just about any kind of wedding. Choose a simpler, patterned one for a casual wedding, and a solid coloured maxi dress with bold accessories for a formal wedding.
