Known as the perogy lady, Barb Dumbovic of Barb’s Delights is celebrating her 7th anniversary in business in the same location at #88 – 2789 Highway 97 N. in the Blue Heights Centre. Barb was not new to the restaurant and food industry when she opened Barb’s Delights. She originally started her food career operating the first food truck in Kelowna in 2002 and selling it in 2009. The quaint restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Saturday, offering a menu of home-made full breakfasts, wraps, perogies, cabbage rolls, smokies, burgers, soups, sandwiches and salads. Favourites on the menu are the Ukrainian breakfast, Barb’s mega breakfast and her famous asparagus omelette. Barb’s combo includes four perogies, two cabbage rolls and a smokie served with fried onions and sour cream. She also has daily specials. Barb has a huge section of frozen perogies, cabbage rolls and other delights that you can take home. Connie Denesiuk has been re-elected as the chair of the Okanagan College Board of Governors. Chris Derickson has also been re-elected to the position of vice chair. Denesiuk has served on the board since 2012 and Derickson since 2014.
The new Champion of the Canadian Culinary Championships held this past weekend in Kelowna is Chef Jinhee Lee of Foreign Concept in Calgary. She won against eleven competing chef’s with her finale dish being “Cha Ca La Vong” featuring turmeric fish mosaic with dill and was paired with the Bartier Brothers 2014 Gewurztraminer. Chef Eric Hanson from Prairie Noodle Shop in Edmonton took the bronze and the silver was awarded to Chef Joe Thottungal from Coconut Lagoon in Ottawa.
Congratulations to long-time Okanagan basketball coach Dino Gini who will be the head coach of the men’s Okanagan College Coyotes team as well as an assistant on the women’s team. A partnership between Okanagan College and the Kelowna College Basketball Society will now see the college offer women’s and men’s collegiate teams this year. Doug Sperling will be an assistant with the men’s program and Chris Oddy will be responsible for recruiting and development along with Jamie Boreham and Gene Wolverton.

With a funding grant of $5,000.00 from Interior Savings, Project Literacy Kelowna Society will have the opportunity to improve the resources available to its more than 400 learners and 125 volunteer tutors this year. The program matches community volunteer tutors with adult learner who want to improve some area of literacy. The funds will be used for resource material including workbooks, textbooks and readers that learners utilize while working with their tutor. Kathy Conway is the president of Interior Savings Credit Union and Christine McWillis is the executive director of Project Literacy.
