Scenic Canyon: A place worthy of its name

Looking for something new to explore? Then you're in luck! The Scenic Canyon Regional Park has plenty to explore, and is great for any level of outdoor experience.

Located in East Kelowna, this park is a must-do for spring hikers. The trail, located behind the locally-known Layer Cake Mountain, starts above the canyon. On the way down to the creek, you're greeted with amazing views of the mountainside and its geologically unique cliffside that was created by ancient volcanic activity.

If you decide to head right across the bridge, you can take the trail down to Mission Creek and follow alongside it. You'll also see a beautiful rock pillar that is definitely unique to this area.

It's nearly impossible to capture it all in one picture. Once at the picnic area, there are a couple rock ovens and what look to be lava bubbles on the side of a large moss covered rock cliff.

Scenic Canyon is also the trailhead to the Mission Creek Greenway, which means it's really two parks in one! Althought it's not the same wide, flat greenway we are used to throughout Kelowna, it still gets you there and continues on down to the Okanagan Lake near Lakeshore Drive.

The Scenic Canyon Park is great for biking, hiking, dog walking and horseback riding. So if you need something fresh for the list this season, Scenic Canyon is sure to do the trick. If it's already this green this early in the season, I can't wait to see what spring will bring!

Since the day I took my first photography course in high school I knew it would soon become my new-found passion. After finding some much-needed inspiration on Instagram, I slowly got into the adventure side of photography. Whether it’s climbing a mountain or shooting down a zip-line, off-roading or just simply doing some fishing in the backcountry, I’m always trying to find new ways to have a little fun while applying photography in the process. Raised in the Okanagan, I still find myself blown away with what I discover in our valley. Join my adventures on Instagram @theexpeditionist or contact me at ericsaukarookoff@hotmail.com.
