The BEST frozen treats in Kelowna

What’s better on a hot Okanagan day than a frozen sweet treat? What about a frozen treat made by Kelowna talent with Kelowna ingredients? There are a few exceptional spots around town making ice cream treats from scratch, and in flavours that go above and beyond the basics. Here are seven of the best unique, hand-crafted flavours in Kelowna.

Chocolate Hazelnut Goat Milk Gelato from Carmelis

If you’re into sweeping Okanagan views, cute farm animals, artisan goat cheeses, and delicious gelato, you must visit Carmelis! The true hero of their gelato case has to be the chocolate hazelnut. Don’t be afraid of any “goat” flavour, because all you’ll taste is lush, velvety, chocolate and hazelnut, with melted Ferrero Rocher drizzled on for extra chocolate and hazelnut crunch. They make their gelato on site with their own goat milk, which actually has more nutritional value than cows’ milk; It’s higher in protein, lower in fat, and has less lactose. So it tastes amazing, and it’s good for you! Carmelis also does full cheese tastings in their quaint shop, and they’re on the south Okanagan wine route (which includes wineries like Summerhill, Cedar Creek and St. Hubertus). Gelato with health benefits, wine, and cheese? Twist my arm!

Passionfruit Cheesecake Gelato at Il Tavolino

Il Tavolino crafts authentic gelato using traditional Italian methods and ingredients. An Italian-made gelato machine creates the dense, smooth texture that we love about gelato, as it doesn’t whip air into the cream. They then mix in traditional Italian flavours, and some local Okanagan ones, to create a gelato that marries the best of old-world Italy and our vibrant Okanagan. One stand out flavour that often sells out is their Passionfruit Cheesecake: bright white cheesecake base, with a swirl of bright passionfruit throughout, it balances sweet, sour, creamy, and tropical. The perfect flavour combination to really excite your taste buds. If they don’t have it when you go, fear not! They have other exciting creations like Key Lime Cheesecake, Pink Grapefruit, and a sublime Dark Chocolate.

Salted Caramel Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream at Joey Kelowna

Joey Restaurants has launched “Scoop for Care,” which combines 2 great things: dessert and charity. With every order of their homemade liquid nitrogen ice cream (yes, liquid nitrogen) you support our local Women’s Shelter. This ultra-modern, über-foodie freezing technique uses what looks like a science experiment to create perfect & fresh ice cream. When the -321° F liquid nitrogen hits the ice cream base, microscopic ice crystals form to create “the creamiest and smoothest ice cream you have ever tasted.” And because they make it fresh daily, their flavours always rotate to use specialty ingredients and keep you excited. Their salted caramel has been getting such rave reviews that it’s been on a permanent rotation. Their chefs lovingly make the salted caramel, infuse it into the cream base, and then infuse the liquid nitrogen. And then douse the finished product in more salted caramel. Sure to satisfy any foodie or philanthropist!

Sour Cream and Strawberry at BNA Brewing Co.

BNA isn’t just for beer. They take serious pride in creating everything that they can from scratch, and this includes the Strawberry Sour Cream Ice Cream that comes on their Rhubarb Coffee Cake dessert. The unconventional combination infuses sour cream into a classic vanilla ice cream base, with chunks of local strawberries. It’s icy, sweet, rich, and refreshing, all at the same time – it’s truly unforgettable. However, they only make it when strawberries and rhubarb are in season, so if you miss it this summer you’ll have to wait for next year. It’s the perfect complement to the rhubarb cake it comes with, but there’s no shame in just ordering a big bowl of it by itself. Treat yo’ self.

Blackberry Lavender Coconut Bongo Bars

You can always rely on the Kelowna Farmer's Market for refreshing and unique treats, but the recent addition of Bongo Bars - vegan, local, and delicious popsicles - has to be a new favourite. Their Blackberry Lavender bar, made with local berries and lavender from the Lavender Farm, sings summertime refreshment. The base of coconut milk gives creaminess and mild tropical sweetness, the berries throw a tart punch, and the lavender brings a subtle floral note. AND it's dipped in chocolate! Happiness on a stick, even if you're dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free, vegetarian, or vegan!

Watermelon Sorbetto at Artisto Gelato

Another authentic Italian gelato hub, Artisto has many a flavour that highlight local ingredients without using preservatives or artificial flavours. The Watermelon Sorbetto, conveniently dairy free, vegan, and nut free, tastes like a piece of frozen summer. The only ingredients are fresh watermelon and syrup (so that it gets to the right texture in the gelato machine), and the simplicity makes the watermelon shine. So fresh, and so good. You can find the Artisto truck on Water St. in front of Stuart Park, but be warned that their hours are based on demand. They open at 11, but might be open until 5... Or maybe 10?! Get there early to avoid disappointment!

Peanut Butter Pie at Mad Mango Cafe

Mad Mango has so many delicious things on their menu that you may not have noticed their Peanut Butter Ice Cream Pie yet. If you have noticed it, it’s probably your favourite treat there. Not only is the portion huge for the price, it will satisfy any sweet craving you might have. Imagine chocolate ice cream mixed with peanut butter, on a crunchy graham cracker crust… drizzled with more chocolate sauce. Yep, it’s easy to see that this one’s made with love and made for sharing with someone special. (Or not, because why share when you can get your own?)
