The owners planted Dutch white clover, the base of their golden honey, and a long-term nectar source; they give the bees water lines for the long hot Okanagan summers, and they have built a compound to keep the bears at bay. With a background in ecology and geography, she is interested in the relationship between people and the environment, and especially peoples’ use of water. Her dynamic presentation and solid science make for a fascinating snapshot, investigating this key resource for agriculture and residents of the Okanagan.   3. Okanagan Sterile Insect Release Program Melissa Tesche, Acting Director Working directly with growers and residents, the Okanagan-Kootenay Sterile Insect Release (SIR) Program is a safe and innovative way to control the codling moth population, and reduce the use of pesticides.  Since OKSIR’s founding in 1992, both the codling moth population and the amount of pesticides used per acre have decreased by around 90%, building a stronger and healthier BC fruit industry.  Come listen to the newest updates to this program, and find out how close the Okanagan now is in meeting export requirements for Japan for cherries and other tree fruit.   4. “Why protect farmland? How can we make it happen?” Martin Collins, Director of Policy and Planning Agricultural Land Commission, Okanagan The Provincial Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) is an independent administrative tribunal dedicated to preserving agricultural land and encouraging farming in British Columbia. Janmaat, Associate Professor of Economics, UBC Okanagan John joined UBC in 2007, after teaching for seven years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. His primary research and teaching interests are in environmental and natural resource economics, with a special focus on the economics of water resources. Beyond the university he enjoys almost anything outdoors that involves some exertion. He describes himself as being easily distracted by talking about mountaineering, skiing and mountain biking. He says a conversation with him about golf or fishing probably won't last that long.   6. BC Cherry Association Sukhpaul Bal, President Owner, Hillcrest Farm Market & Indian Food Café From Grower, July 12, 2016: British Columbia’s cherry growers are working diligently to gain market access to Japan.    Japan requires evidence that cherries are not a host of the codling moth – Okanagan growers have tested for the pest three years in a row.   Cherries are already accepted by China, a lucrative market worth more than $50 million to BC growers last year. BC’s replant program, with $9.4 million financed by the provincial government through to 2021, is encouraging more cherry acres to be planted. Bal says there are now more than 5,000 acres of cherries cultivated in the province. Bal will speak on cultivating, shipping, export regulations, and there will be cherry tasting at the seminar.
