2018-11-17 19:30:00 2018-11-17 21:30:00 America/Vancouver Silk Road is returning Silk Road. Canadian performances threading the cultures of Asia and the world. A true east meets west experience. As recently as the 1990’s, stereotypes of Chinese music as atonal and inaccessible dominated white North Americans’ perceptions of the country’s sound. The idea of blending Chinese music with popular Western styles was seen as absurd, if not impossible. Silk Road has changed all that. At the heart of Silk Road is the artistic vision of its founder, Qiu Xia He (Chu-sha Her). While performing with the Shaanxi Music & Dance Troupe at the Vancouver Folk Festival, Qui Xia made a dramatic decision to stay in Canada. She was welcomed by the household of a Celtic musician on Hornby Island and it was there that the seeds of her extraordinary cross-cultural expression was born. To hear Qui Xia play a country tune on her Chinese Pipa accompanied by the very talented Andre Thibault, French Canadian Flamenco guitarist and oud player, is indeed a unique experience. Together they also treat the listener to Latin, Celtic, Jazz, Blues, Arabic, Spanish and of course, traditional Chinese (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmV2oYeGl10) folk tunes. They both sing and play their way through their very eclectic repertoire. Along the way, they have earned a Juno nomination, two West Coast Music Awards, two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, and countless enthusiastic reviews. Those of you who were entranced by their last visit to us in 2013, please tell your friends and be sure not to miss them this time around. $20.00 tickets are available at ABC Hobby in Kelowna, Mad Hatter Bookstore in West Kelowna and online at lanternfolk.ca (http://www.lanternfolk.ca/) . Tickets for members go on sale at the store fronts on Oct. 31.(cash only please). The general public sale begins on Saturday, Nov. 3.
