1969-12-31 16:00:00 1969-12-31 07:50:16 America/Vancouver West Side Story (Performance Troupe Class) Young lovers are caught between prejudice and warring street gangs in this seminal retelling of Romeo and Juliet. From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents' book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. The world's greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre's finest accomplishments. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. Highlighting the talents of a young ensemble cast, its exciting, sophisticated score by Bernstein and Sondheim is often considered Broadway's finest-its songs part of the nation's musical heritage. As originally staged by the legendary Jerome Robbins, the show is an impressive showcase for passionate performers. (Students cannot miss classes in April of 2016. We treat our Performance troupe like a main stage production so attendance is imperative unless illness or emergency) Instructors: Randy Leslie, Angela Lavender, Norene Morrow, Roslyn Frantz Classes Every Tuesday 4pm to 6pm September 15 to December 15, 2015 January 12 to April 19, 2016 (No classes March 15 and March 22) Sunday, April 24 11am to 10pm Monday, April 25 4pm to 10:30pm Tuesday, April 26 4pm to 10:30pm Wednesday, April 27 4pm to 10:30pm Thursday, April 28 Opening Night: 6:30pm call time for 8pm show Friday, April 29 6:30pm call time for 8pm show Saturday, April 30 11:30am call time for 1pm show Closing Night : 6:30pm time call for 8pm show Kelowna Actors Studio, 1379 Ellis Street 1379 Ellis Street events@kelownanow.com
