A Taste of Fringe
Fringe is for renegades, for the brave, for the adventurous. Fringe is for the curious. Fringe is for Kelowna.
On Saturday, September 22, curious, adventure-seeking renegades will descend on the Rotary Centre for the Arts as we pull back the curtain and reveal A Taste of Fringe. For one night only, we will welcome two award-winning artists to share their fun and eclectic work with an exclusive audience. In the iconic words of R. Kelly, “After the show it’s the after party” and we’ll throw open the doors to the chicest party, featuring a cornucopia of live performances scattered throughout the R.C.A. along with libations and fun times with your fellow rebels.
RED HOT MAMA
We’re thrilled to welcome Melanie Gall and her powerfully emotive, technically dazzling voice as she shares her one-woman musical “bio-play” with Kelowna. Gall will take the stage as Sophie Tucker, who recaps her rise through early 20th century vaudeville, cabaret and Hollywood while giving a performance at the peak of her career. The format allows Gall to fully inhabit Tucker, relating the indignities of being forced to perform in blackface and fired for her plus size, telling jokes that would make Joan Rivers blush, and singing the ‘20s standards and bawdy love song.
HOTEL VORTRUBA
Fresh off their dates at the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the award-winning RAGMOP Theatre will bring their unique brand of comedy to the Mary Irwin Theatre for Hotel Vortruba, a surreal wordless physical comedy where finding shelter is not so simple. With otherworldly room service, broken lamps, creaky floorboards, and giant rats, a guest confronts a proprietor who has been hiding his true self. A gorgeous, hilarious and daring theatrical experience where magic lingers in every shadow. Come, check into Hotel Vortruba.
THE AFTER PARTY
In true Fringe fashion, we will recreate the feeling of discovery as we welcome a variety of live acts to perform throughout the R.C.A. during the After Party. Grab a drink and roam the halls as you take in some indoor street performances or take a seat and ready yourself for the next performance in one of the dedicated theatre spaces. What will you discover during A Taste of Fringe?
TICKETS + WORKSHOPS
Tickets for A Taste of Fringe are just $35 for the entire evening, or $15 for the After Party and are available at the Rotary Centre for the Arts box office, or online! Visit KelownaFringe.ca for more information on A Taste of Fringe, including complimentary professional development workshops for local emerging artists of all ages.
