'Earth is a square, heaven is a circle' by Mary Enyit Guaw Jong at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art
On view starting Saturday, November 6th is 'Earth is a square, heaven is a circle' in the Members' Gallery of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art.
Curated by Asia Jong, 'Earth is a square, heaven is a circle' is an exhibition of paintings by Mary Enyit Guaw Jong that brings together her identity as a second-generation Chinese Canadian and her experience growing up as a market gardener in the agricultural community of Armstrong, B.C. In using the circle, her canvases act as portals to sublime valleys and lakes, dreamscapes of a world not unlike our own. Scenes of speckled moons appear, rising out of a swell of the clouds billowing over the mountain ranges of an autumn’s dusk. Through her series of paintings, a unity is found between the grounding of the earth and the heavenly sky above.
'Earth is a square, heaven is a circle' is on view in the Members’ Gallery of the Alternator from November 6th to 27th, 2021.
The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is open Tuesday to Friday, 11am - 6pm, and Saturday 11am - 4pm. To learn more about this exhibition visit www.alternatorcentre.com.
