The Doukhobors' Journey
To acknowledge our common interest in peace and justice, Kelowna Unitarians is hosting a talk by John J. Verigin, Jr., a well-known Doukhobor and award-winning advocate for peace and justice, on Sunday, March 31st, 10:30 am at 1310 Bertram in Kelowna. John J. will discuss the pacifist roots of the Doukhobors who refused to swear allegiance to the Russian Czar and were exiled to Canada in 1899. Please join Kelowna Unitarians in welcoming John J. Verigin to our midst. All welcome!
John J. is the great-great-grandson of Peter (Pëtr) V. Verigin, the first Doukhobor leader to emigrate to Canada. He is currently the Executive Director of the official Doukhobor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ (USCC). Practical results have been almost 40 years of USCC participation in local, provincial, national, and international non-violent efforts for peace and protection of the environment, the realization of human rights for Canada’s indigenous peoples, and support for those suffering from human folly or natural disasters. For his work on peace, justice, and humanitarian assistance, Mr. Verigin has won numerous awards, including the Hannah Newcombe Award from Operation Dismantle in 1988, a Peace Medal from the Russian Federation, and the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal.
A special collection will be taken as a donation to the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ (USCC).
