1969-12-31 11:00:00 1969-12-31 17:00:00 America/Vancouver Art Exhibition - Brittney Bear Hat: Kokum Calgary artist Brittney Bear Hat brings her exhibition Kokum to Kelowna’s Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art from January 6 through February 18 2017. Kokum is inspired by Bear Hat’s on-going exploration of relationships and the value they hold through storytelling, memory and traditions. In this body of work, she presents objects passed on to her by her own Kokum (Grandmother in Cree), examining the value of house-hold items and how their meaning evolves over time. Bear Hat is a graduate from the Alberta College of Art and Design. Based in Calgary, her work focuses on identity and belonging. Half Blackfoot and half Cree, Bear Hat makes work about memory and how her personal history impacts her Native heritage. Using her family archives and personal items combined with text, Bear Hat retells stories and memories to reveal new value and meaning. The exhibition will be celebrated at an opening reception on January 6 at 7pm at the Alternator. Please join us for refreshments and connect with other local artists and supporters to explore the work of this emerging Canadian artist. The event is free and open to the public. Kokum will be on show until February 18 2017. The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist-run centre located in Kelowna at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Avenue. The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is a registered non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the development of the creative community. Since 1989, the Alternator has shown the work of emerging Canadian artists, focused on innovative and non-traditional mediums engaged in social and cultural issues.
