Ballet Kelowna Presents: 150 Moves
Featuring Ballet Kelowna with Alberta Ballet ll and Arts Umbrella Dance Company Ballet Kelowna celebrates Canada’s 150th Anniversary with an astounding mixed programme of collaborations from our country’s leading dance companies and artists.
Dénouement

Doppeling
Choreography: Simone Orlando • Music: J.S. Bach, Double Violin Concerto • Performed by:Ballet Kelowna with artists from Arts Umbrella Dance Company
The Fiddle and The Drum, Excerpt
Choreography: Jean Grand-Maitre • Music:Joni Mitchell • Performed by: Alberta Ballet ll
Don Quixote Variations
Choreography: Edmund Stripe • Music: Ludwig Minkus • Performed by: Alberta Ballet II
Originally commissioned by Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, the pas-de-deuxDénouement was created by Matjash Mrozewski to showcase the tremendous talents of NBoC dancers at the Eighth International Competition for the Erik Bruhn Prize. A work of stunning complexity, intricate formations manifest and disappear as the dancers rhythmically disentangle and unfold themselves from one another’s grasp.
Doppeling is best described as “a gender-bending vision of doppelganger ballerinas breaking loose” (Georgia Straight). Orlando’s cleverly constructed, theatrical romp is a visual feast. An ensemble of dancers - wearing the same bobbed wig and skin-toned bodysuits - provide mesmerizing commentary on conformity and individuality that is at once playful, serene, and edge of your seat fun.
The Fiddle and The Drum is a poetic work born from the collaboration between legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell and Alberta Ballet Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître. Excerpts from the full length work will be performed by Alberta Ballet II, Canada’s newest program for emerging artists. Mitchell’s melodic metaphors express her grave concern with conflict, violence, and environmental degradation, providing an ideal musical backdrop for the richly nuanced contemporary ballet.
