A crowd of thousands packed the grounds of the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus eagerly awaiting the arrival of the royal couple, who were in Kelowna without their kids on Tuesday.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were running late to UBCO, where they were greeted by UBC president Santa Ono, Premier Christy Clark and First Nations leadership.

The pair smiled as they walked past the crowd and towards the school. Kate stunned in an emerald green dress and nude shoes, while Will looked dapper in a navy suit.

To celebrate UBCO’s 10-year anniversary and the 100th anniversary of UBC, Will and Kate unveiled a plaque at the Kelowna campus.

After, they made their way to the school’s gymnasium, which was full to the brim with people, where the ladies Okanagan Heat volleyball team was taking part in an inter-squad game.

Will and Kate entered to an excited crowd and sat to watch a few plays. The team presented them with two Heat jerseys for them, and two teddy bears—for Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Natalie Livingston, a first year UBCO student and a volleyball player for Okanagan Heat, got to talk to the couple after the game.

“I woke up this morning, and I was just like, ‘I get to meet Will and Kate, like, the Will and Kate,” she said, laughing. “They were just really nice people, so kind.

You would think showing off your athletic skills to the royal couple would be intimidating, but Livingston didn’t seem to see it that way.

“It was a lot of fun and really cool to be able to play for them,” she said. “It was just an amazing experience that I’m probably never going to get again.

“I was a little bit nervous, but really, it was fun.”

If you’re wondering what they said to the teens, Livingston said they talked about how beautiful the campus was and how much they enjoyed watching the game.

“They talked about how they should’ve brought their trainers here so they could play with us.”

Claire Peachey, another UBCO student, was getting emotional after seeing the royal couple, and described the experience as incredible.

“It hits close to home,” she said. “My granny was at the Queen’s coronation and she recently passed last year. So it was just a nice thing…I thought of her.

“I consider this a once in a lifetime opportunity and as soon as tickets were released on the UBC forms website I got them right away.”

Peachey and her friends watched the volleyball game while they waited for Will and Kate to arrive.

“Once the Duke and Duchess came in, they just blew my world completely,” she said, describing them both as, “so poised.”

“Kate was just so beautiful in her green dress and I swear her hair was made by the gods themselves.”

After chatting with the players, Will and Kate proceeded through the stands and off the premises to head to Mission Hill Family Estate for a wine tasting.

They were escorted through the city by motorcade, and a helicopter flew over for double protection. Not to mention the level of security surrounding the couple at all times.

Let’s just say, it was a day for the books in Kelowna.
