Hikers in New Zealand had the surprise of a lifetime when they crossed a suspension bridge and it collapsed under their feet.
Four French hikers were on a four-day march around Lake Waikaremonana when the incident occurred. The group came to the end of the 46 kilometre hike and had one last suspension bridge to cross. The bridge was supposed to handle a maximum of 10 people. They made it halfway across the bridge when one of the two cables came off.
The hikers suddenly fell 8.5 metres into the water below, much to their shock and disbelief. One of the hikers recalled the moment he realized what happened. On the blog Rolandades International, he says he looked for one friend, whom he saw standing, another friend a bit further away. His third friend was nowhere to be found. But once the friend looked up he saw the third hiker still on the bridge, crawling towards the other side.
Luckily no one was seriously injured. A video capturing the dramatic event had been released by one of the hikers on YouTube for all to see.
