What do you always find yourself saying?
I like to quote movies. I don’t think there is something I specifically say all of the time though.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Jimmy Fallon. He is entertaining and hilarious, and it would be awesome to see The Tonight Show live.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
The Hart Memorial trophy for the NHL’s most valuable player.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Jesus. Enough said.

Who inspires you?
My family

What are three things on your bucket list?
1) Watch an NFL game at Ralph Wilson Stadium
2) Eat pizza in Italy, New York, and Chicago
3) Watch one of my brother’s hockey games in Switzerland

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
Eye Ballin

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
My 70th birthday, just to see how life turned out.

What are you passionate about?
Optometry and sports.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
The day I married my beautiful wife.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Earning my degree for Doctor of Optometry, with distinction.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
Earls, because they have an amazing view of the lake and a great patio to enjoy the Okanagan weather.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
There are so many, it is tough to choose. I really enjoy playing golf at Black Mountain Golf Course, playing hockey at the CNC, and spending time at the beach or by the pool.

What is the name of your business/organization?
NUVUE Optometry

What does your business/organization do?
NUVUE Optometry provides state of the art optometric services. Our advanced technology allows us to provide our patients with the most comprehensive eye care available at this time. With specialty retinal imaging, we can diagnose conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma earlier. Our TearLab analyzes the quality of the tear film, to manage and treat patients with dry eye. We also utilize corneal topography, which measures the shape of the front of the eye, for specialty contact lens fitting. We are currently the only optometry office in Kelowna to provide low vision services, which assists patients with reduced eyesight. Our fashion forward optical dispensary has stylish brands such as Valentino, Tiffany and Co., Kate Spade, Hugo Boss, Tom Ford, Dolce and Gabanna, Maui Jim, and many more. Our onsite edging lab creates single vision lenses for your frame that same day, for many prescriptions. Our lab uses premium quality lenses, such as Crizal single vision lenses and Zeiss progressive lenses. Come in and visit us to find out more information about any of our products or services!

What is your mission?
To provide Kelowna with the highest level of patient care, by becoming the leading clinic in medical optometry.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
I would like to expand the scope of practice of optometry and improve our current government billing. I would also like to create new avenues where optometry and ophthalmology can co-manage patients more efficiently.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
For NUVUE Optometry to become the practice people utilize in the valley, due to its advanced diagnostic services in the exam room and the affordable premium optical dispensary.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
My father, Dr. Brad Almond, was very influential in expanding the scope of practice in optometry in Alberta. For example, he was instrumental in allowing optometrists to prescribe pharmaceuticals.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Caring, progressive, and thorough

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
I would tell them that they are amazing! They are all very friendly, communicate well and connect with our patients. I appreciate everything they do for NUVUE.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
Our state of the art eye care facility will help many people with their vision and eye health concerns.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
I would want them to be experts in telemedicine platform because we could discuss online consultation between primary health care providers (such as optometrists) and specialists (such as ophthalmologists). We could then send digital images of our patient’s eyes to the ophthalmologist, and they could triage the patient’s urgency for care more efficiently. This co-managing and consultation over telecommunication platforms would save the healthcare system money and improve efficiency.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
I would like to see more young professionals in business and a stronger business community.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
We have amazing weather, beautiful vistas, and the best wine.
