In Focus | Laurie Bartley

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Laurie Bartley

What do you always find yourself saying?
Grateful and blessed are two words I use frequently.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Already do. I am blessed with an amazing, loving husband, talented sons, and supportive family. They are smart, caring, fun and so much more. I surround myself daily with people I am excited to see. I consider my business collaborators my friends, and appreciate my clients and the experiences we share. I love the richness and diversity of people in my daily life. But If I really had to choose just one day with just one person – it would be me. The times I’ve had an entire day to myself are rare.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
At a BABES In Business Networking meeting a few months ago, Meaghan Alton led us in a terrific exercise where we were given a blank achievement award certificate to complete. Mine was “in recognition of making the world a more beautiful and connected place”. So to me, that is a Humanitarian award, which would align with my values, and would totally ROCK!

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I would choose to spend time with my great-grandmother. She grew up in a very difficult time of war. I would love to listen to her story, know of her challenges and triumphs, and thank her for retaining her kindness and generosity throughout it all.

Who inspires you?
Shirley Jensen. She is a founding member of the Central Okanagan Hospice Association, and even in her retirement is facilitating a 24/7 Vigil program. She matches trained volunteers to provide compassionate care and to bear witness the last breaths of those who are dying in our communities. Shirley is a shining example of community involvement and has spent over 30 years of her life committed to the ideal that no one should die alone. I completely admire her service and dedication to those in such need in our communities.

What are three things on your bucket list?
To visit Haida Gwaii
To create a documentary on Integrative Health and Healing,
To participate in a collaborative well-being centre.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
Come on board! One of my core values is inclusiveness, so I’d find a way to host and treat as many others as is safe and manageable. I would create wellness retreats on that yacht.

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
The day I obtain our yacht.

What are you passionate about?
Sharing the benefits of integrative health care, and helping others discover how to tap into the power they have within themselves to move forward in health to vibrancy.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Has to be my wedding day, since that led to the birth of two more people I love and admire most in the world.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I have received many awards and trophies for sports, community involvement and volunteering, but my proudest recognition is in the form of handwritten notes from our adult sons, thanking me for the values I have modelled, the impact and inspiration I have been to them. Completely fills my heart.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
There is not one specific place - I like variety of foods. The last place that I really enjoyed dining at was Bouchons. Valencia was an excellent server, the food, wine and ambiance are great.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
I really like to discover new things and enjoy scenic views in our amazing city, so I host wellness Wednesday gatherings every few weeks. It gives me an opportunity to be exposed to activities I have always been interested in, and to share that with others.

What is the name of your business/organization?
I am self employed and work under the name Believe

Where can people find you or your business online?
www.lifestylearchitect.life

How do people connect with you on Linkedin?
www.linkedin.com/pub/laurie-bartley/87/3a7/158

What does your business/organization do?
I offer ease and comfort within your own body through a menu of therapeutic services. I am a therapeutic touch recognized practitioner, and I am excited to have recently added plant healing through essential oils to my offerings. I am called the “Headache Angel”.

I am honoured to be a participant in The Daringly Mindful™Workshop Program for Women, a series of monthly one-day offerings that support you in clarifying who you are as your whole, best, and authentic self. I invite you to find out more about this impactful opportunity to join eight progressive leaders in the Okanagan to support you in all areas of your life – mind, body, and soul. https://daringlymindful.wordpress.com/daringly-mindful-you-workshop-series/.

What is your mission?
To move integrative health care forward in Canada, and to be one of the reasons someone is able to say “I had a terrific day today”.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
I am aiming to become a qualified therapeutic touch teacher. Currently, we don’t have anyone in Kelowna who can teach, so I facilitate Diane May’s courses, twice/year in Kelowna. Her next set of courses is in August, with a free information session Friday, Aug 14th, so connect with me if you are interested (or check the KelownaNow Events page for details). I also support our local therapeutic touch practitioners by hosting monthly meetings to share, deepen skills and knowledge, plus keep abreast of our provincial and national member activities.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
I foresee a wellness centre with collaborative partners. A property with water, trees, vegetable gardens, and space to host overnight guests for retreats would be ideal.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
In the field of therapeutic touch, Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, QTTT and Diane May, RN, QTTT. Both have extensive, published works and have been a driving force and inspiration to so many others.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Paying radical attention to each body’s intrinsic wisdom; Leading with the heart; empowering others.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
Thank you for entrusting me with your skills, talents, and time. I appreciate all you bring and all you are.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
Healthy, vibrant, radiant people can offer so much more to their families, neighbourhoods, communities, and so on. By uplifting others to healthful lives I help create a ripple effect. Feels terrific.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Quantum Physics. It would be fascinating to discuss how they are putting into scientific terms what healers for centuries have been practicing: how we are energetic beings, how impactful our thoughts and belief systems are to our health and lives, and so on. I really enjoy deepening my learning in these areas.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
Traffic flow and parking. The downside of being so amazing is that everyone wants to visit, and it does create traffic challenges. So give yourself extra time in the summer months to get around the city. Enjoy the views as you stop along the way.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
Diversity – loads of scenic views, water, hiking/biking trails, sports and cultural activities, we have tremendously talented artists, leaders, speakers – there is never a lack of things to learn and discover. I LOVE the pianos in various spots downtown this year. Beautiful impromptu opportunities for discovery and enjoyment of music. Brilliant!

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Joy Kingsborough. She is smart, articulate, dedicated to her clients, and has the gift of being completely present with people.

Some general comments I would like to share are:
Thank you for the opportunity to share a bit about myself. I believe strongly in community involvement and volunteering. I am a proud hospice volunteer, contributor to OK in Health Magazine, and I support our growing therapeutic touch practitioner community. I encourage everyone to find a cause you believe in, and find a way to contribute.
