In Focus | Linda Edgecombe of Learning Edge Resources

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Linda Edgecombe

What do you always find yourself saying?
“Ok everyone, let’s lock and load.” It’s just usually to get my family going.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
My first reaction is Ellen, as I love how funny she is. I love to laugh. I love to make people laugh. But I’d love to spend a day with Jan Arden. I’d love to share the stage with her, some humorous banter and me backing her up for one song. “Good mother perhaps" or "Insensitive”

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I have received lots of awards for my speaking career; I’d like to receive “mom” or “wife” of the year. Or a combination of “Best oldest female in the family of the year” I’d like to receive “woman of inspiration”

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I would like to have more time with both of my grandma’s. I wished I had asked them more questions about their lives and their parent’s lives.

Who inspires you?
To be honest with you, my husband inspires me. He is incredibly hard working and when he gets a bee in his bonnet, well look out. He’s very focused and dedicated to his business, family and his charity, and IWEN.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Cooking school in Italy
Hiking in the French Swiss Alps
Share the stage with Jan Arden

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
“In over our heads”

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
August 6th, 2015 as it is my birthday. I turn 55 this year and I plan out, and execute that day each year. Starting with an early morning hike with my two dogs before heading down to Paul’s Tomb for swim.

What are you passionate about?
Oh my gosh, all things supporting children and women. I am passionate about laughter, it’s a must in everyone’s life and I am passionate about my daughter’s fastball team. I love fastball. I love good food, good wine and great conversations while listening to good music.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Most people will say, the day I got married or the day I gave birth to my kids. But my favourite day would be my anniversary. Kev’s and my first date was a golf game and so we always golf on our anniversary, laugh a ton, usually hit a few wineries for some great wine, followed by dinner and well, you know, those are always great days.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I have been awarded with making it into the “Speaker Hall of Fame” Humanitarian of the Year for my fundraising support for our Charity IWEN, Hunger to Succeed awarded me in the Top 60 Motivational speakers on the Planet. But last year I walked 800 plus kilometres across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, by myself and I mean alone. I went in March and no one was there. It was hard, painful and it rained and snowed and there were high winds 30 out of 35 days.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
I am a soup person, so it’s not really dining but I love Mad Mango on Bernard. I also love going to our new Yacht Club.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
I love concerts and the Rockets games, really, anything that creates a date night. My favourite sport is golf, and getting out in a fun tournament or with a few friends is awesome. My daily activity is hiking, I love how many nature hikes there are to enjoy. Lots of hills, which is great for my dogs and me!

What is the name of your business/organization?
Learning Edge Resources Corp.

What does your business/organization do?
I provide motivational speaking, corporate training, and MC services to companies and associations who hold meetings and conferences. I specialize in the topic areas of having a work/life balance, breaking busy – changing our culture from overwhelm to calm, team engagement and accountability training. I also MC lots of events and I write a weekly column, and have published several books.

What is your mission?
My mission is to get people fired up and ready to shift or get off the pot. I want to create moments as welcome as a deep belly laugh and as profound as an honest look in the mirror. Get ready to be energized!

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
To inspire people to give themselves permission to take their lives back. Your life – your pace that’s my motto

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
I would love to experience some very large meetings with 10,000 plus participants. I have spoken up to 7,000 people, but I would love to see what the production is like with a very large crowd. I also want my own, humorous, no BS TV show called “Shift or Get off the Pot” helping people ‘snap out of it’ and get on with their lives. Truthfully, I just want to stay relevant.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
The speaking profession has so many forerunners, some that are famous, celebrities, depending on the ‘climate’ of what people want, it changes every few months.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
I love to make people laugh, professionalism, low maintenance, and easy to work with. We do not take ourselves too seriously and we are very honest. I am a shoot from the hip, no BS woman. I can’t ask people to not sweat the small stuff, if I am sweating the small stuff.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
Thanks for allowing me to do what I love to do and having my back on the stuff that are not my strong points.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
Personally I have loved being involved with so many events, fundraisers, meetings over the years. I just love Kelowna, Kevin and I have lived here for 25 years and just hold so much pride in calling Kelowna our community.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Any large corporate investors would be great. I’d like to chat about how “we have in one generation created a working culture of business.” I’d like to see if they think investing in the people factor of companies is worth it to them. Because busy is costing North American companies billions of dollars each year in sick leave, stress leave, and workplace accidents. I’d just be curious if it would be of interest to them, in changing the culture we have created.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
I would put some money into improving the High Noon ball diamonds. They are the home of the Kelowna Minor Fastball Association and this is where the girls play fast ball. They are in terrible shape as the bathrooms are horrible, and our boys play on beautiful diamonds with trees and great grass. Every other community that has fastball complexes, have amazing facilities, trees, pathways around them, and lush grass. Ours are an embarrassment.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
We have grown up over the past 10 to 15 years. We have created a dynamic downtown, great walkways, restaurants, pubs, sports, and facilities. Traffic has gotten better and our wine country is amazing. We are one of the best destinations to visit in Canada.
