In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.
What is your name?
What do you always find yourself saying?
“My car is making another funny noise.”
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Leonardo Dicaprio. That guy looks like he has some serious fun. I think I was supposed to say Ban Ki-moon...the secretary-general of the United Nations.
If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I know people say this all the time, but I really don't think there are any that I would aspire to receive. Watching peoples' lives change in our practice every day is so much more exciting to me. That being said, I do think it is important to recognize people who do great things.
If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I would choose Nelson Mandela only because I am amazed by people who can suffer so much injustice and then rise up again to become something great. He was the epitome of “leader.”
Who inspires you?
My Wife Jessica Brix. Every day I find myself wanting to be better for her, and I feel so lucky to have her in my life. She motivates and inspires people all day long, and I am so proud of her.
What are three things on your bucket list?
1. Climb to base camp of Mount Everest.
2. See a Dallas Cowboys game in the new stadium.
3. Do a self-guided African Safari (I will keep the window closed though).
If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
“Atlas.” It would be named after the cutest dog in the world (my dog!).
If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
No thank-you! I love the idea of just waiting to find out. I won't pretend I'm not a planner, but I am more than happy to enjoy the journey without knowing what it will looks like. The journey is the part so many of us miss out on while we wait for the destination.
What are you passionate about?
My passion is helping people in my clinic. At Brix Family Chiropractic & Wellness we have put together an amazing team, and when I walk in and see a full waiting room and people everywhere smiling, I feel so happy that I was part of creating that. The people who leave happier and healthier are what drive my passion to keep doing whatever we can for them. As well, I am passionate about living a healthy lifestyle. Being on a hike or on the lake, getting beat up by my trainer, playing my sports, or eating the only food Jessica allows in the house gives me so much joy. I would say it is certainly one of my passions.
What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
It was three days after we got married. We were at an amazing bed and breakfast in Tofino, we had a fantastic three hour surf session, and we sat on the patio drinking really nice champagne. That night we had a romantic dinner, and then we sat around a beach fire and made jiffy pop. Best day of my life so far.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Graduating from Chiropractic college and then passing the Canadian boards were two of my proudest moments. The amount of time and energy (and money!) that goes into all those years of post-secondary education is really more than many might think. When it was over, I was so proud.
Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
Waterfront wines. I really appreciate the fact that the menu always changes, and if something is in season, they really make an effort to showcase it and create some truly unique flavors. The staff are all fantastic!
What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
I went to the Bottega Music Festival this year, and I was really impressed. The music was fantastic, the atmosphere was perfect, and I was able to bring Atlas with me!
What is the name of your business/organization?
Brix Family Chiropractic & Wellness is a clinic on Kirschner road in Kelowna. The team consists of two Chiropractors, two Massage therapists, an Acupuncture/Chinese medicine practitioner, two Registered clinical counsellors, a nutritionist, and a very talented Chiropractic assistant. Being so big, we are able to serve so many of the people in our community, and we couldn't be more proud of the job we do. We love being able to help people get past their health challenges, but our real focus is on preventing those issues from coming back! We truly believe in prevention and wellness. Our motto is “Healthy by choice, not by chance.”
Boned, A Broth Company is another business I have been fortunate enough to start with my good friend Shane and my mother in law Maria! We have taken her 200 year old Slovakian broth recipe and turned into a product that is in huge demand. Our fresh made broths deliver countless nutrients, 29 grams of protein per serving, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and the healing and regenerative collagen that so many of us need. We are on the verge of appearing in store freezers throughout western Canada, and we couldn't be more excited.
What does your business/organization do?
We provide health and wellness care in a multidisciplinary clinic.
What is your Twitter account?
What is your mission?
My mission is to build a community of health conscious, active and happy people who are living their lives, and functioning as optimally as possible. This mission is conveniently exactly the same for both my businesses, and that congruency makes working so hard that much easier.
If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
I want to open a second Brix location and expand the number of people we can serve.
Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
Two to three locations, and an even better reputation for delivering the best health care possible.
What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Commitment to quality care - Every patient's care is completely customized, and we do it without pressure or judgment.
Fun – In our clinic, the energy is so great. Bright yellow walls, lots of energy, and everyone is having fun. We have a great balance between being professional, but also being silly.
Community – we try to get involved whenever we can. We sponsor sports teams, we participate in community events, and we even have a food bank event where people bring a bag of food instead of money for their treatment. It has been a great success!
What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
I am humbled on an almost daily basis by how lucky I am to have attracted the team I have at Brix. I may not say it enough, but I am truly grateful for every single one of them. My name is literally on this business, and they make me look good!
How does your business/organization impact the community?
If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
I would want people who are experts in grocery, food products, and marketing. The Boned Broth Company is growing so fast that we sometimes feel like we are just hanging on! It would be fun to pick the brains of more people who can help us go to the next level and fill the demand without losing our minds.
If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
PLEASE....more parking downtown! I actually know this is coming, and I think the city really is doing a fantastic job, but I just don't want to circle the block anymore.
What do you think makes Kelowna great?
I am going to need another page for that one. The truth is it's really everything. We have the best climate, three lakes within 20 minutes of my house, the mountains, a small town feel with big city amenities, and a great waterfront. The best thing is that Kelowna keeps getting better every year. I am really excited for what this council is doing.
My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Rich Stevenson....He is the co-owner of Sovereign Cycle. Those guys have built a great business by really focusing on the customer experience. He is so involved in the biking community, and has been an inspiration for many.
Some general comments I would like to share are:
One thing I have learned this year is that the people we love aren't just in our lives, they are our lives. It is so important to make sure that people get to hear how you feel about them. Don't assume they know...tell them. Life can throw anything at us, and it's those people we will need or miss when it happens.
