In Focus | Kayce Cooper

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Kayce Cooper.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I am originally from Burlington, Ontario and have lived in Kelowna for just over three years.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
As cliché as it may sound, my boyfriend. When the weather is nice we like to explore in the mountains a lot and go fishing. No matter what it is, he always has me laughing.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
If I could go anywhere in the world I would go to Ontario to see my family and then to Australia to visit two of my sisters who have been travelling.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I love Lakehouse Home Store in downtown Kelowna. They always have some pretty awesome decor that you wouldn't typically find elsewhere.

What is your favourite activity?
I think now I'd have to say that my favourite hobby is fishing. There are so many lakes here in British Columbia and I still have a lot I'd like to cross off my list.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
I love burgers, but I also love pizza. Maybe the Gambino Cheeseburger Pizza from DunnEnzies.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I work for Coral Environments which is a local HVAC company here in Kelowna. When I often meet people after speaking with them via e-mail they always assume I'm a guy by my name. It makes for an interesting official meeting.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Driving across Canada alone to live in Kelowna would have to be it. I basically started my life from scratch and didn't really know anyone. It gave me a lot a confidence I wasn't aware I had.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My favourite childhood memory... I think just being young and surrounded by family. As everyone grows up they sort of take their own direction and it often isn't anywhere near where you're going. It would be great to have my family all together again!

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Last year I did a fundraiser for an organization called Operation Smile. With the help of Al Hildebrandt, who is a local sponsor of the organization, and many local restaurants, we were able to raise enough to provide just over 10 corrective surgeries to kids suffering from cleft lip and cleft palate.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
There's so many things that could be improved on. Aside from homelessness, abuse, animal cruelty and keeping our earth healthy, I'd have to say seriousness. Time is limited and there's way too many people out there not enjoying the time they were given. Life's too short!

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
I love how many outdoor activities there are here in Kelowna, and not to mention all of the beautiful wineries! There's always something to do or somewhere to go.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Good question, if I'm looking for downtime I honestly love staying home. I used to be such a homebody so I love taking advantage of those days when I can just stay in.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Moving here I couldn't believe how many homeless people there were. In Burlington we only had one or two that were 'well-known'. That is something I would definitely like to see change because it shouldn't be that way.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The first thing I noticed about Kelowna was how friendly everyone is. A lot of people are very involved in the community in their own ways and I think that's great!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1) Travel
2) Be successful
3) Build my dream home

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm terrified of heights and swimming in lakes!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)
Facebook

What is the name of your business/organization?
Coral Environments Ltd.

Why did you get into/start this business?
A great opportunity was presented to me that I knew would be challenging and rewarding to my professional growth.

What is the goal of your business?
To provide the best service in commercial HVAC-R.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
Winding down, I think way too much!

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I was young and naive so I think there's a few things I would change, but I'm happy where I am now.

What do you always find yourself saying?
I just hope all of the words come out right, I talk too fast sometimes and create a lot of my own words.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
My parents, I don't see them enough!

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
To support our community!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Getting myself to where I am today.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Jeff Blower! He was my first boss here in Kelowna at Kelly O'Bryan's and has always been so supportive of everything I have done.

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Brookyln Hewitt of Hollywood & Lime Spa Lounge & Salon!
