In Focus | Sue Ross

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Sue Ross

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I'm originally from Vancouver, but moved to Kelowna in 2003.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My favourite people to spend time with are my aunt and uncle in Winnipeg. They have been a source of inspiration on so many levels. They came together with virtually nothing and have built a healthy and successful life and relationship.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would hop on a plane and visit Thailand and Vietnam to discover a new culture, learn more about mindfulness and meditation and partake in awesome activities like rock climbing and scuba diving.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
My favourite store in Kelowna would have to be Opus Art Supplies. I've recently begun drawing mandalas and I have found myself getting lost in there being inspired by all the supplies to create new art.

What is your favourite activity?
I could pick a sport or physical activity, but I don't have a favourite. I jump all over the place. My favourite activity is connecting with business owners from all industries and learning about their work. I'm passionate about business operations!

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Tacos. All the time. I could eat Latin-inspired food all day, every day.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I'm not easily embarrassed so this is a tough question to answer! I just roll with the punches.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I took a solo vacation to Costa Rica in winter 201,5 which was the catalyst for a significant 'nervous breakdown' upon my return. What inspires me about this is that I spent 2016 rediscovering myself and learned how to manage anxiety and trust in myself more.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My favourite memories as a child were the days that my dad would take my brother, sister and I to a local playground set amongst some tall trees in Abbotsford. These were carefree days and left me with a feeling of love and security.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
My favourite charity is the one I currently work with! I've been inspired by the foundations that Jim Belshaw has built to ensure that no Canadian should want for a decent pair of shoes. It's also very important to me to instil a sense of community and giving to my two children. I spend time nurturing their personal interests which have been leaning towards donating toys and clothing to kids in need as well as collecting food for the Kelowna Food Bank.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would love to live in a world where people can be free to express their individuality without worrying about being bullied. I'm a fan of challenging long-held beliefs on any number of topics. Imagine a world where we all communicated with each other with love, respect and kindness? That's the world I'd like to live in.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
I LOVE exploring the Okanagan and all it has to offer! I don't have a favourite, but some things include hiking, rock climbing and SUP.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
You can find me at the Bean Scene on Pandosy in the Mission. That's my happy place.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I believe the city is already doing a great job fostering the arts community.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
I believe the culture, the landscape, the business community and the people who contribute to our city all have a hand in making Kelowna awesome.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1) Travel and work remotely for a few months out of every year (with and without my kids)
2) Take a volunteer trip to make a difference in another part of the world
3) Master a second language

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am a quote fanatic. Love a good quote!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)

What is the name of your business/organization?
Sheldrake & Ross Enterprises / Shoe Bank Canada

Why did you get into/start this business?
To help small to medium sized businesses grow and succeed. I choose to work with Shoe Bank Canada to make a positive impact in our country as well as satisfy my passion for business.

What is the goal of your business?
To inspire others to automate many aspects of their businesses to give them more freedom to do what they do best.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
Self-discipline! This is an ongoing struggle and fuels me to constantly learn and up my personal best.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I don't believe in regrets. Every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. I wouldn't change a thing!

What do you always find yourself saying?
'What's the worst thing that could happen?'

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I would spend the day with Andy, the man (and voice) behind the Headspace app. I've been meditating with the help of that app for the past year and I'd love to learn more about his journey and his outlook on business, meditation and life in general.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Shopping local is important to support our local economy. We all have to help each other!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
I would like to shine a light on Rosanne Brown of Redscope Media. She is an inspiring entrepreneur and regularly gives back to the community at her events, such as Kids & Ladies Closet Cleanout, Winetenders and the BC Interior Sportsman Show.

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Jim Belshaw of Roy's Shoes.
