In Focus | TJ Fix

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your Name?
Thomas Fix, but none hath uttered that name since I was born. I go by TJ now, and more recently, ‘TJ Fix RMT’.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I’m a Kelowna local and I’ve lived here long enough to remember the sounds driving over the old bridge and that 'Wakefest' was a thing.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Kelsey Fotsch, my partner in crime and business, separately of course. She helps to keep me on track and never forgets to remind me not to squeeze the toothpaste from the middle of the tube. As an RMT power couple, we have yet to shy away from a challenge or obstacle in our path!

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would go into a time-machine to teleport to the next summer Olympics to see myself as a Sports-First-Responder for either the Canadian Trampoline or Soccer team!

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I was lucky enough to be a part of BNA’s opening crew. To see and experience how much passion goes into running that establishment is truly incredible! Their Earl Pale Ale has filled my growler on more than one occasion.

What is your favourite activity?
I feel as though jumping on trampolines is something that humans are supposed to naturally outgrow for safety and survival reasons, but I don’t think I have that mechanism built into me. I will always be jumping on trampolines. Always.

If you had to choose pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Would anyone be proud to know that I have had all three combined into one? I was going through an 'Epic Meal Time' phase and that was one of the fortunate consequences of that time in my life.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I could say that it was the moment 50 eager wave surfers on the opening day for H20 watched in cruel amusement as my shorts slipped off my 13-year-old body, flying to the top of the machine. But actually, it was the moment three seconds later when an Australian fellow yelled 'you lost your trunks mate!' and no one bothered to toss me my trunks and I had to go up and grab them myself.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
This was before finding a home at CrossFit Okanagan. Brandy Osborne, who is an RMT with Hockey Canada, took time to sit down with Kelsey and me at Starbucks to speak with us as new RMT graduates. One after the other, she slayed three hours worth of our questions. Her insight and experience has inspired us and really sharpened my goals and direction as an RMT!

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I’ve collected a plethora of dear memories with my sister Julia and cousin Jonny. It’s hard to choose from getting lost on Knox Mountain as 8-year-olds, having rocks dropped on my head, building and collapsing extravagant forts on each other, inventing un-winnable games, the list goes on. I can’t choose just one.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
As a Sports Massage Therapy Candidate, I am looking for any and all volunteer opportunities with sporting events and sports teams. You definitely won’t see me running a marathon, but I have no problem being there at the finish line to help people out!

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I may be thinking too small here, but when we were in high school and the alumni would say 'just wait, high school is nothing like the real world' without actually offering any advice on how credit cards and finances work. We need to bridge the gap and help with integration into the 'real world,' whether through mentorship or education. I believe it’s important in todays society.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Nowadays, I enjoy a good ol' pick-up game of basketball or soccer with some extremely competitive friends. Not only is it great exercise, but it’s a fantastic way to generate business as an RMT!

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
I would seek out one of many hidden waterfalls I have discovered whilst living here where. I would sit cross-legged underneath to cleanse my mind and spirit. Or Knox Mountain.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I’d love to see more live music. There’s nothing more positive than the experience of watching young, budding musicians or a group of dads play old Eagles hits!

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
We live in a city where you can ski one day and go swimming in the lake the next. What’s not to love?

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1) See the Northern Lights from space
2) Act as a Sport’s First Responder for an Olympic or world event
3) Live to be 300 years old

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
When I have the chance, I love to play piano. Specifically, I play the first 10 bars of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song until someone asks me to stop.

What is the name of your business?
TJ Fix Registered Massage Therapy.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I competed nationally for Team BC as a trampoline gymnast. Through working with RMTs in my own injury rehabilitation, I combined my passion for helping others with my sports background to spawn my dream career!

What is the goal of your business?
To help people find function, strength and mobility where they thought it was lost or unattainable. Those cookies on the top shelf may be expired by now, but I may be able to help you reach them!

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
I had a mid-life crisis at 16-years-old; I stopped competing trampoline. I didn’t buy the convertible I always wanted or go on a cruise, but it was still definitely a hard transition back to normal high school life.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would probably have bought that convertible.

What do you always find yourself saying?
'I’m totally gonna go to bed early tonight.'

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I would choose Connor McDavid to dedicate a day to teach me how to skate.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Shopping locally allows us to peek into someone’s hard work and passion. I will always support that.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I have yet to be stung by a bee.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Shoutout to Dr. Hilary Hart, Valeo Health Clinic’s new chiropractor. Dr. Hilary is knowledgeable and has a great approach to her treatment. She is also one of the few individuals who witnessed my first SpinCo class, sorry you had to see that!

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Dr. Hilary Hart!
