In Focus | Brandie Jollimore

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Brandie Jollimore.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I grew up in the small town of Castlegar and decided after graduating high school it was time for me to spread my wings. Voila, 18 years later in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, Kelowna is where I now call home.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
That would have to be Janna. Some people just bring out the best in you, your brightest mind, your deepest laughter, your view of the world and your role in it. My friend and I felt this quote best honoured our friendship and so each of us has different parts of this tattooed on our left wrist where it is with us throughout each day. 'Maybe you’re the same as me, we see things they’ll never see.'

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Europe! The sheer beauty, its culture and my own curiosity to explore and feed my soul.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I love the cute boutiques in the Pandosy Village, the Bean Scene coffee is a great place to sit and recharge, with a little people watching.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Pizza, hands-down, artisan style shared with friends any night of the week.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Perhaps it’s yet to happen, as nothing too earth-shattering yet.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Life has so many inspiring moments, the people, the places, the resiliencies, and the personal relationships. I’m humbled when I’m offered what I believe to be great opportunities, and as I’m told, it’s a reflection of the person I am. I’m then inspired to stay the course…..

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
If you can imagine a hidden spot up in the woods, where only you and the one’s closest to you know of, surrounded by cedars and pines trees, lush foliage and gorgeous green moss. Cooling down as you take the plunge into the waterfall riding the natural waterway down its course. My dad took us on this adventure and introduced this magical place that has captured my heart and will hold a special place in it for all of time.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community
I give the gift of life. I have the blood type that can benefit everyone, such a small amount to give with the most incredible impact.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
More compassion for one another. We all need each other and the sooner we realize that, the more enriched our own lives and the lives around us will become.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
How to choose? Patios with friends, sunset yoga and dinner at a winery, taking in all that the Okanagan has to offer, refined and wild.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
The less travelled trail, beautiful nature with my dog, Lily. Taking in the journey, the view and the calm.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Let’s continue to recognize shifting dynamics (e.g. job insecurity) with so many people and how we as a society can bridge that gap. If we can also continue to explore as many affordable housing options going forward, that would serve this community well.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
There is strong sense of community and many young entrepreneurial people who are broadening our definition of this city even further. Watch for things to come…

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1) To have my photography be featured in an art gallery
2) Scuba diving in the Maldives, sooner rather than later
3) To go Skydiving and survive... and that may just create the most embarrassing moment

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
Can’t share all my secrets, as that’s the fun of one on one… Oh yes, I can change my own sparkplugs.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)
Facebook and Instagram.

What is the name of your business/organization?
B.jollie Artistry

Why did you get into/start this business?
I have very much enjoyed and will look forward to continuing to reveal to people their natural beauty, without judgment. It’s wonderful to have people ‘see’ themselves with fresh eyes.

What is the goal of your business?
I want to help women feel fabulous, encourage self love and acceptance.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
We all go through storms in our lives, some are quick passing little rain showers and others are those ground-shaking thunderstorms. Know that you can survive them. Without the darkness you can never see the stars. For me, the death of my brother changed my whole life.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
Honestly, as hard as everything has been, it has made me what I hope I am, this strong and incredible woman that I strive to be every day.

What do you always find yourself saying?
'Everything happens for a reason'

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
There are few and far between that you can sit in silent stillness with and never have to worry about what you’re doing, your thoughts or whether you’re loved… Janna Connor.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
There are other individuals like myself who have taken a chance to follow their dreams and their vision, and it always feels right to both give and receive that support within your community.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Opening my own business.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Dawne Russell, owner of the fabulous up and coming Boutique Esthetic’s Lounge. She’s big spirited and yet has a calming presence. Thank you for believing in me.

My choice for the Kelowna Now In Focus spotlight is:
Jane Mifflin, KoLu.
