In Focus | Brent Carmichael

Meet Brent, he has lived in Kelowna since 2014. He is a local entrepreneur working hard to motivate people in the Okanagan with his love of music and culture.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Honestly I’d say my mum! She’s always so supportive of whatever I’m doing and she’s the perfect mix of inspiration and reality check.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Parlour Ice Cream! I’ve never had a bad experience in there. People are always smiling and interacting with the owner. How could I not love great people and great ice cream?

Describe yourself in one word.
Creative.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I’d go to Cuba. Seems to be so much history there and so many of my favourites in one place. Beautiful scenery, beautiful people, beautiful music and most importantly great food!

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
I’m a big fan of biking around the city with my dogs. They are the real stars of the show but they let me hang out with them most of the time.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I got stuck in the middle of a water slide. That’s really all you need to know.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I’ve had so many inspirational moments. Most recently would be a guy on the street singing my lyrics back to me as I walked by. So amazing and I love it.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I hit a home run straight to my mum in Little League Provincials when I was 11 or 12. It was the first game she was able come out to in that tournament so it was a cool moment.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I do little Love Life Giveaways every Friday afternoon. If I hear good things about a person or a business in the community I try to take something in for them. Coffee, Booster Juice or cupcakes are usually pretty popular.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would change the way we view leadership. Everyone should have a voice and have a real opportunity to change the world for the better.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
I like going to the Myra Canyon Trestles. It’s usually pretty quiet up there and a good place to think.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
In the Arts. I think there needs to be more support for artists who are looking to collaborate and make this city proud with their music, dance, painting etc.. There’s potential for more!

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The potential for sure. There’s so much potential here to rival the bigger cities like Vancouver or Toronto. We just need to make it happen.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
I’d like to play Wembley Stadium, drive a Formula 1 car and act in a Marvel film.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I love anything that goes fast! Cars, motorcycles, horses. But safety first of course.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
My instagram is @kokobutterzz.
That’s probably the easiest way to check on what I’m doing or just say hello. I’ll say hello back I promise.

What is the name of your business/organization?
My business is called Axl + Grit.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I started Axl + Grit because so many people have told me that certain things are impossible to achieve. So I’m going to do my own thing and surround myself with people who only believe in the possibilities.

What is the goal of your business?
To provide as many people as possible with music, motivation and culture. I want to make people lives better by being a part of it.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Slowing down is hard. There is so much that I want to accomplish but sometimes I need to just chill and be okay with it.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I think I’d have to do things the same way. That’s the only reason I’m right here, right now.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Tomorrow doesn’t exist.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Find your ‘Why’ and find a way to explore it. If you could wake up and do anything, what would you spend your time doing?

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Ken Block would be an amazing guy to spend a day with. Entrepreneur, loves his family and he can really really really drive a car.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It’s important to support our own. I like knowing the stories behind how ideas and or businesses were created.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?

Surrounding myself with great people. I have some really good ones in my corner!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Josh Smith deserves a shout out! He’s such a talented singer and songwriter but he always make time to be a real, down to earth human being.
