In Focus | Cassie Gibson

Meet Cassie Gibson! Cassie grew up in Nanaimo and has called Kelowna home since she was 7 years old. She is a positive, curious, animal-loving gal who you'll likely find at the dog park or BNA.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
Born in Nanaimo, and I moved to Kelowna at 7 years old.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Can it be my dog? (Her name is Finn and we are best friends). But if not, I will choose my human best friend, Laina Burton. She's so upbeat, fun to be around, and we share a lot in common. We always have a great time.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
BNA just opened a new tasting room and it's so cool! I love hanging out there after work with my friends, grabbing a beer and playing Skee Ball. My high score is 210 (no big deal).

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would love to go to New Zealand and hike the Abel Tasman Coast Track. It's always been my dream, it looks so beautiful!

Describe yourself in one word:
Curious.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Swimming in the summer at Kalamoir Park.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
When I walked into the change room in Banff and accidentally followed a couple into their stall, not knowing that they were sharing a stall together. When I turned around to leave, I slipped on the wet tile floor and fell down.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Getting ice cream on a summer night while camping at Scotch Creek Provincial Park.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I always donate when offered the chance at places like the grocery store and local businesses. Also, every Christmas, my mom and I sponsor a local family in need.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
The desire to live in excess. For example, people who live in houses with 20 bedrooms but there are only 2 people living there. I feel like there is so much more that could be done with the money and space that goes into such "luxury." I often think about how much we really need versus how much we want.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
There is a beautiful hidden beach by my house that I love to frequent in the summer with my dog, Finn.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Opinions on homelessness. It saddens me that conversations about homelessness and poverty often lead to arguments, and it seems as though we have a massive lack of empathy surrounding such a sensitive topic.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
So much to do outside at all times of the year!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Live in another country
2. Take my dog to the Grand Canyon
3. Ski in Japan

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I collect fridge magnets!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Instagram @cassgibson

What is the name of your business/organization?
I'm at accountant at BNA.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I've always been confident in my ability to work with numbers and knew that becoming an accountant was right for me. BNA hired me on for a part-time role while I was studying at University, and I ended up staying on and moving into full-time because I love it - BNA is such a great place to work!

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Having spent most of my life in Kelowna, sometimes I find it hard to step out of my comfort zone. When I feel too comfortable is when I know that I need to push myself more.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would do the same!

What do you always find yourself saying?
Pros and cons.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Don't take things personally. When people treat you poorly, they likely have other things going on - it's not about you.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Seth Rogan.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
To support local family businesses and help grow our Kelowna community.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Graduating from University with Honours.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Stephanie Litster. She is the controller for BNA, Skinny Dukes and Public Liquor. She handles it all and runs a tight ship. I Iove working with her.
