In Focus | Kelly Cross

Meet Kelly Cross. She was born and raised in Prince George!

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband Norman, he is my best friend. We have been married 40 years.

What is your favourite local store in Prince George and why?
Princess Flowers... Beautiful top quality arrangements and great service.

Describe yourself in one word.
Loyal.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Baden-Baden, Germany. I spent a few hours there on an excursion about six years ago. I loved the picturesque little town. It is full of charm, character and history. I would love to try the thermal baths.

What is your favourite activity in Prince George?
Spending time at my cabin, reading a book and enjoying a glass of local wine.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
When I was a realtor back in the 80's I had an appointment to show a home with tenants. They must have forgotten about the appointment. I knocked, no answer so went in as prearranged and found them in bed... You guessed it!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Becoming a director with a direct sales company, leading a team of 113. I have moved on but now I am changing lives through healthy living products and for fun and a jewellery company. Watching people grow and make some money is amazing.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Going to a small country school at Red Rock and having so many memories. Swimming in the creek after school while waiting for the bus, using an outhouse at -30! The camaraderie of a small country school can't be beaten. This year we will be celebrating Red Rock and Stone Creek schools with a reunion in August.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
A few years back I did a lot of volunteering. I stepped back for a bit and am now looking for a good fit.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Terrorism... People should be able to live, think and travel freely without the fee of terrorism, whether at home or elsewhere. We were in Vegas for our 40th wedding anniversary when that horrific shooting occurred. No person or group has the right to create terror in people. Everyone has the right to live their lives in peace without worrying that someone doesn't like how you live or think.

Where would you sneak away to in Prince George to spend some time alone?
My own backyard overlooking the Nechako River.

Where would you like to see positive change in Prince George and why?
I would like to see more activities for the youth of Prince George. Somewhere they can be occupied, have fun and feel safe.

What do you think makes Prince George great?
The people. Everyone is so friendly and helpful here. We also have an amazing outdoors with forests, lakes, rivers and trails, all close by. We live in a beautiful city.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Travel to Ireland
2. Live by an ocean or sea
3. Visit Sicily for an extended period of time.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am an introvert.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Dye & Durham Corporation.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I originally owned the business under the name Northern Registry Services Ltd. in 2002. I thought I would retire but Dye & Durham called me a few months later and gave me an offer too good to refuse so here I am.

What is the goal of your business?
Dye & Durham purchased Northern Registry Services from me seven years ago. Our goal is to continue to grow by providing a much-needed service to the general public, lawyers, notaries for mobile home, land titles, corporate and personal property services.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
I am a bit of an introvert.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I may do some things differently but overall the same. I am the person I am today from past experiences.

What do you always find yourself saying?
'Holy!!'

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Always do your best, don't let anyone rain on your parade.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Queen Elizabeth II. She has seen and done many things over the years while leading with grace.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
I fully believe in supporting your own community through businesses big or small. Keep our own economy growing. These businesses are what make our community what it is.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Other than my children and grandchildren, I worked hard to have had a successful small business and now as an employee of Dye & Durham, I work just as hard to get their name out to the public. I love my job!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Trista Grenon is a new realtor and part-time employee with Dye & Durham. She has overcome many obstacles to get where she is today.

My choice for the PrinceGeorgeNow In Focus spotlight is:
Christine Buemann from DLC Canadian Mortgage Experts.

Some general comments I would like to share are:
I have been married for 40 years to my wonderful husband Norman. We have two adult girls and two grandchildren who are the light of our lives. One of my favourite pass times is to spend family time at our cabin. I like to stay busy and adore jewellery, perhaps a little vain of me, so I joined Tocara Jewelry, a direct sales company, as well as a healthy living company. Chemical free cleaning is a must in my home, especially at the cabin. It protects our waterways from environmental pollutants and should be for anyone concerned with the environment or allergies.
Working at Dye & Durham has been a wonderful experience so far. The company has a reputation for being one of the best places to work at and it certainly upholds this praise. As a Dye & Durham Registry Agent, I enjoy helping private individuals as well as lawyers and notaries. I consider myself to be quite adept at solving queries, delving into land title matters and transfer of mobile homes. I worked for nine years at Northern Registry Services Ltd, eventually owning it for the next nine years while I worked out my home. My relationships with clients over the years has left a great imprint on them and I still have my past clients visit me at my place for legal matters. It’s been exciting working with Dye & Durham and I’ve come far on my journey here. I look forward to continuing this wonderful relationship with Dye & Durham and to continue living in Prince George, my home for life.
