In Focus | Lindsay Young

Meet Lindsay Young. She grew up in a small town in Ontario called Beeton, but studied nutrition and made London, Ontario home until she was 23. Her parents and two brothers moved their entire lives to Kelowna on a whim, and she followed them here on July 25th, 2015!

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My favourite person to be with is my boyfriend. He is the first person I want to tell anything to. My favourite place to be is in his arms joking and laughing about something!

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Funktional. Maybe it’s because I still feel like a tourist here sometimes, but I love looking at all things Okanagan.

Describe yourself in one word.
Human.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Chefchaouen, Morocco. You’ll have to google it!

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
That is a serious toss up between hiking and wine tasting. In a perfect world, both!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Last year, in the middle of a class I fainted during a discussion about Ebola. I have also fainted in a bathroom in Quebec where no one spoke any English! I have low blood pressure, so it has happened to me a few times.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I’m constantly inspired by everyone in my life!

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My childhood dog! She was abused before we adopted her and I honestly think within a few days of her adoption she knew that period of her life was over. She was the kindest, loving and selfless being on the planet!

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
There are two organizations that I love. The Neurological Wellness Association, which I have fundraised for. They raise money to offer alternative health services to people who need them and don’t have access to them through their health insurance. I also love The Okanagan Fruit Tree Project. They come around to anyone’s garden in the Okanagan and take any extra fruit and vegetables you may not be able to consume and give it to people who can’t afford fresh, local produce!

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Hunger and malnourishment. I hope to see, and hopefully contribute to in some small way, proper education and better agricultural standards for food.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
I like to hike up Mount Boucherie alone and see Okanagan Lake from end to end.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I’d like to see more access to healthy, local, organic produce to the homeless and those who depend on the food bank.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
Kelowna is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada. I love how it brings people from all over the world to experience it. Where else can you hike up a mountain, swim in the lake, and experience some of the best wine in Canada, all in the same city?

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Visit the French Riviera
2. Be in a helicopter
3. Take cooking classes in every possible continent

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm slightly colourblind.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
People can connect with me through Instagram, Facebook, on my website and through e-mail at lindsay@eatyoungnutrition.com.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Eat Young Nutrition.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I can’t imagine doing anything else, honestly. I’ve always wanted to help people in some way. I believe preventative care through purpose-driven eating has a huge future and only positive impacts on the medical system and to individual health and longevity.

What is the goal of your business?
I want to empower people to be proactive about their health and well being through their food choices, and foster an environment of nurturing and nourishment towards our bodies.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Saying 'no' is a struggle for me. I’ve learned that you must be true to yourself first.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would have reminded myself to always be kind, especially to myself. But I am so happy in the place I am in now that all the mistakes in the past don’t matter anymore.

What do you always find yourself saying?
'Sorry!'

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Have patience for the good things. And hide kale in everything!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
This would be hands down my best friend in the whole world who I haven’t seen in almost five years! She lives in Germany, and will always be the one person who has seen me at my lowest and highest! We both swear we have been best friends in all the past lives we’ve lived!

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Shopping locally keeps profits in our community, strengthens our small businesses and, in the case of food, is so much more nutritious and environmentally sustainable.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
So far, it would have to be my business. I want to reach out in as many ways as possible in our community and always be giving back.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My beautiful mom! She’s helped me and encouraged me in more ways than I can explain!

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Central Valley Truck Services. For the incredible family behind the business!
