In Focus | Michael Letterlough

Hey Kamloops, meet Michael! He is from the beautiful Cayman Islands but has lived in Kamloops for more than 10 years. When he isn't spending time outdoors with his family and friends, he is working on some awesome home-made spices to add to your pantry. Check it out!

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My favourite person I enjoy spending time with is my wife Roxane, because we share similar interest in outdoor activities. We enjoy travel and playing sports.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
My favourite store in Kamloops is Fountain Tire, Downtown. The staff are friendly and service is great.

Describe yourself in one word.
Resilient

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would go to Kauai. Kauai reminds me of back home because of the ocean, weather and beaches. It also reminds me of Kamloops, because of the mountains and friendly people. It's the best of both places and feels like home.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Mountain biking! This place is awesome for the sport.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Well, there are many but one that stands out at the moment is eating a fortune cookie without remembering to take out the paper message.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
The most inspiring thing that's happened to me is becoming a father. They push me everyday to be the best person/father I can be.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Spending time on the iron shore, fishing and collecting driftwood.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Any sporting activities that my kids are involved in. As well as helping people in need that I see day-to-day.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
No more night shifts! These things need to go.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Pineview trail network.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
Being a food lover, I'd love to see some new food options come to town. Not just chain restaurants, but more ethnic/mom-and-pop places to eat. Kamloops has options but I feel we can add to it!

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The location, the weather, and the people.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

  1. Travel to every continent on the planet.
  2. Watch the Isle of Man TT sport bike race.
  3. Own a eco-friendly B&B on a remote beach

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm an underground miner that has a degree in Finance, that used to throw the hammer in track and field. Oh and I recently discovered I can't raise my right eyebrow by itself.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook and Instagram

What is the name of your business/organization?
Rub and Spice

Why did you get into/start this business?
To make a better life for my family.

What is the goal of your business?
To Intrigue your palate!

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
My biggest struggle in life is fine tuning my purpose.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Money can't buy life!

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Work at building your own dreams, instead of building the dreams of others.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I'd spend it with Eddie Huang (look him up), because I love his passion for food, people and world cultures.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Shopping locally, supports and grows the local economy. It also gives you an insight on what you can find in your immediate area that you may have not known about. Shopping locally leads to the growth and success of Kamloops.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
My kids! Watching them grow and learn about their first nation heritage has made me so proud.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Shout out to Luke Bennoa, killing it over at Soccer Quest and Rebel Robot!

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
