In Focus | Quinn Bray

Meet Quinn Bray. Quinn is originally from Toronto but has been living in Kelowna since 2015. She is an ambitious go-getter who hopes to see Europe and make it into the dental field.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I'm from Toronto originally but moved to Kelowna in 2015.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My favourite person to spend time with is my boyfriend, Dalton. He's my ultimate supporter and always knows how to make me laugh.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Funktional! I love that there's a store supporting small local businesses and everything in the shop is absolutely adorable.

Describe yourself in one word.
Ambitious!

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would love to visit Amsterdam! The architecture there is so creatively inspiring and I'd love to drink champagne and stitch on a patio and then and only then would I be living my best life.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Chilling at Gyro Beach with my friends! It's my favourite place to embroider!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Oh, just one... I once walked face first into a pole while I was with a group of people, and it still keeps me up at night.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I feel inspired every day, I don't think I can pick just one! Hearing the stories from people who order a hoop from me always inspires me so much. I love being a part of a gift to someone special, or a piece that they'll hang on their wall and always have a certain memory associated with it. I feel so inspired when people tell me the inside jokes they want to be stitched, or a family pet remembered. It makes me feel like my work matters and that's the best feeling in the world!

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I have one specific memory of my sister, my mom and I using those Crayola Window Writers and just going wild on the doors and windows of our house. I love that both my mom and dad inspired me and my sister to always have creative hobbies to keep life interesting!

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would change the amount of plastic and disposable waste we use every day. Though bringing your own cup to Starbucks or your own bags to the grocery store is important, we have to start looking at big corporations to change too!

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
The various beach lookouts along Abbott. The Westside looks so pretty at night.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
The cost of housing... Though I understand that it costs money to live somewhere as amazing as Kelowna, it is extremely hard for a young person to afford a house here, and building new homes and apartments shouldn't be petitioned.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
I love how easy it was to transition from Toronto to a place much smaller. It's one of the things that is so awesome about Kelowna. I feel like it's made itself home, having the perfect balance of lively and chill.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Own a house, visit Europe, and have my own art show.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm a Libra baby.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Instagram!

What is the name of your business/organization?
ThreadforFilth Embroidery

Why did you get into/start this business?
I started embroidering and when the hoops actually started looking presentable, I started an Instagram account just to show them off. When people started wanting to buy them, I realized that I should start selling them!

What is the goal of your business?
Being able to do it full time.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Finding good work, life, school, and other work balance. It is extremely hard to find time for everything, but I find nothing more rewarding and motivating then mastering the juggle.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I don't think I'd change anything! I think I am still growing everyday and learning through all the struggles helps build who I am!

What do you always find yourself saying?
Who wants to go to Michael's?

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Quit thinking so heavily about the future! Live in the moment and the rest will come!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I'm boring and going to go with my family (collectively, but one at a time) does that count?

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Supporting passion! The money you spend on an original unique piece made by an individual goes right into their pocket and gives MEANING back to shopping. Shopping from your peers and neighbours is an amazing way to show your support in your community!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Selling my first hoop. I can't recreate that feeling even if I tried.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My sister Michaela! She is an amazing, hard working, beautiful woman who deserves all the happiness in the world! You go girl!

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Sean Bray! He's always making Kelowna proud with his music! He's an insanely talented guitarist and deserves every spotlight!

Some general comments I would like to share are:
I work at Starbucks and the Naked Cafe. I'm a student at Okanagan College, upgrading to get into the Dental field! I started embroidery just over a year ago and it has taken off!
