Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?

I have been in this pretty city for 8 years! I’m from Kenora, Ontario.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My favourite people to spend time with are my kids, my partner Gustavo! I love my family.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Mosaic books! I love to read and support local. Mosaic always has a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. The associates there, especially Alicia, are always there to greet me with a smile and suggest great new books to read!

Describe yourself in one word.
Stubborn. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me I was stubborn. However, I prefer “persistent”.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would go to Brazil. Gustavo is from Brazil, and he usually speaks of it with passion. I’d love to experience his world.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
I love to be outside here! Hiking, on the lake, anything outdoors. We live in such a beautiful place, you’d be silly not to take advantage of it!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I don’t get embarrassed. I don’t even remember the last time I felt embarrassed. I’m pretty quick to just laugh at myself!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?

Becoming a Mother. I had my daughter at a very young age. Although difficult for obvious reasons, it gave me purpose and direction. I was forced to mature quickly, and it helped shape who I am today, and where I am today. It taught me strength, perseverance, and the beauty of loving another being unconditionally. I need to be in life, what I wish my children to be. A Mother is love, and also a role model.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I LOVED, being outside. Playing in the bush, hide and seek around the neighbourhood, biking to the lake- all with my friends. I grew up in a small town, in a generation where we came inside when the street lights turned on; but before that, we were outside discovering independence and exploring with friends. Those were some of the best times of my life. Just being a kid without bubble wrap parents.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I spent a lot of time volunteering with a Cub Scout group in my home town, as a leader/helper. I was in Cubs and Scouts for years, sharing my love of the outdoors with younger groups made me happy. I’ve also hosted lectures at Sprott Shaw College here in Kelowna, to the health care classes, about Anxiety and Depression. Now that I own a business, I’m really looking forward to using it to host fundraisers and campaigns that focus on helping/bettering our local community! Luar also sends monthly support to PlanB International Canada- an organization that focuses on protecting and aiding young girls in developing countries in numerous ways.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would make sure that every child was granted the opportunity to be raised in a safe, healthy, and loving environment. How different might the world be?

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
If I told you that, you’d be able to find me when I wanted to be alone. I’ll leave it to your imagination!

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I love seeing inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community. It’s something that sits close to my heart. We are humans. We should not be secluded or looked at differently because of who we choose to love, what we wear, etc. Kelowna is doing well with this, however there is always room for improvement! This summer Luar held a fundraiser during pride week to help support our local LGBTQ+ youth!

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The nature. The mountains. All of the natural beauty that surrounds us. Kelowna is a gorgeous City.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

1. Visit Egypt and its ancient historical sites
2. Go sky diving
3. Stop jerking away like a lunatic when a Wasp flies at me. Apparently if you stand still they leave you alone. I beg to differ.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I’m only 25 years old! I feel like I’m 40. I think I act like it too. Bed at 9pm? Absolutely.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Usually on Instragram, @luarbodypiercing, and on our Facebook page Luar Body Piercing.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Luar Body Piercing

Why did you get into/start this business?
I’ve been piercing for 7 years! It’s something I’ve always been passionate about. I love what I do, and the personal relationships I get to build with all of my clients, most of which turn into friends!

What is the goal of your business?
I started to Luar to break the mold. To bring a new era to my craft. And era that focuses on positive, caring, fun experiences. We will re-define the stereotype, and set a new standard of quality, care, and hygiene practices.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
It has been difficult to learn how to separate business life from everyday life. I find myself bringing work home with me a lot, I’m just so focused on it. Any business owner will tell you it is tricky to find the balance, but very necessary.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?

Every moment, experience, and choice has brought me where I am today. Where I am today is a happy place. It has shaped me, my life, and my future. I wouldn’t change anything.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Jesus take the wheel.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
I sat with a woman once, she was 101 years old. I asked her this question. I expected a profound speech. She said, “Don’t give up.”

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Bill Gates.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Small businesses are the backbone of our community- and important to our economy!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
It took me a long time to believe this, and maybe it sounds egotistical. I’m not perfect, but you know what? I think I’m a pretty good Mom.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
I think, that every woman out there- who’s holding the fort down. Raising their children every day. Working to support the family. Striving to be a good role model. Carrying the future on their shoulders. All the single Moms... YOU ARE WARRIORS. Thank-you.
