Meet Susannah-Joy Schuilenberg! Susannah-Joy has lived in Dawson Creek, Alberta, Kelowna and Kuwait! She enjoys running and spending time with her husband!
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
Dawson Creek, BC, then Alberta (x 25 years), then Kelowna (2004), Kuwait (2007-2015) then Kelowna again. For good.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband, hands down. He's brilliant, interesting, and he loves me.
What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
My favourite "stores" are all restaurants. Right now, my fave is Mtl Real
Describe yourself in one word.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Galapagos Islands...because //Marine// Iguanas!
What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Running and live music anywhere.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
It takes a LOT for me to feel embarrassed and it's almost impossible to embarrass me.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Being able to implement an internship program here in our practice. I am daily inspired by the newbie therapists and practicum students who come with cutting edge theoretical knowledge, and an eagerness to learn. They, in turn, provide us with the opportunity to provide low fee and affordable mental health services. We have also managed to keep a few of those interns as Associates, and we're really chuffed about that.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Running from the house to the barn in the dead of winter in Northern BC. I loved the feeling of being frozen and coming into the warm barn where the cow, sheep, goats, pigs, and horse waited for me to provide breakfast. They were always so happy to see me. Totally made my day for a lot of years.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I am the Chair of the Niteo Africa Society Board of Directors, which focuses on child literacy here in Kelowna and in East Africa. I also volunteer a LOT of my time as a trauma specialist for non-profits needing either a consultation or to refer.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
How cruel human beings are to each other.
Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
I go running. After a run-in with cancer I'm thrilled to be able to run again. It's my happy place.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
The ongoing development of dedicated bike lanes (biking is great here!), more clean transportation options, and downtown core that is convenient for walking and inconvenient for driving.
What do you think makes Kelowna great?
Four season outdoor opportunities; wineries & micro breweries; and the vibe.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Seeing Lake Baikal from the Siberian Express
Riding the Kiwi Express
Doing a long, long cycling trip with my husband and my dog

The same...except maybe I'd go back to school sooner.
What do you always find yourself saying?

You cannot extend to others what you do not have for yourself.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?

Some general comments I would like to share are:
If I have to live in Canada I most definitely want to live in the Okanagan. Everywhere else is too cold. It's a privilege to live in Kelowna - I very much appreciate the opportunities I've been afforded and the people I've met because I am here.
In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition of the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. Thank you, Kelowna!
