In Focus | Corey Doak

Corey Doak is a local folk musician with a difference. In an industry where image can be everything, it becomes clear very quickly that he has a depth and wisdom that is real. Grab your morning coffee and take a moment to curl up (even if it is's only mentally) and enjoy the great read below.

Where can people find you or your business online?
http://www.coreydoak.com

What do you always find yourself saying?
So...

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
James Taylor

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
Juno: Folk/Roots Album of the Millenia

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose?
Tie: King David/Flannery O'Connor

Who inspires you?

John Steinbeck, Russian Authors, Steve Martin, Madeleine L'Engle

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
-Keep getting better as an artist.
-Keep growing in love & integrity.
-Encourage others to do the same.

What are you passionate about?
I deeply love art, story, humour, philosophy and theology.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Hiking in Cinque Terre, Italy with my wife.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?

It was a big moment in my life when one of my songwriting heroes treated me as a colleague.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna?
Raudz

What is the name of your business/organization?
Corey Doak

What does your business/organization do?
I am a singer/songwriter. I've also produced a few albums.

What is your Twitter account?
twitter.com/coreydoak

What is your mission?
To communicate truth and beauty through song and encourage others to live a thoughtful and loving life through my work.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Martyn Joseph

Who is your favourite male celebrity?
I deeply respect and admire Steve Martin.

I listened to his audiobook ‘Born Standing Up’, and was surprised to find an extremely intelligent, disciplined, thoughtful and hard-working person behind the (brilliant) absurdity of his stand-up comedy.

Who is your favourite female celebrity?
I really admire Joni Mitchell for her sense of adventure in her musicality. Also, I think that Tina Fey is brilliant.

What is your favourite movie?
‘Saving Private Ryan’. It was great on so many levels, but it’s also a story that truly matters. We need to remember the sacrifice that was made for our freedom.

Who is your favourite singer or band?

James Taylor. He is a brilliant songwriter, a great storyteller, an amazing musician and singer. He's also gotten better with age (which is something I respect).

There’s something deeply beautiful about his music. It brings a deeper sense of peace and wholeness to my life.

What is your favourite song?
‘The Boxer’ by Paul Simon is one of my all-time favorites. I first heard it when I was five, and I find something new in with every listen.

It speaks to our humanity on so many levels (struggle and loneliness; isolation and self-deception), but there’s still a sense of hope in the tension.

Where would you like to travel to?
I would go back in time to the folk music movement of the 1960’s for a few months. I love that season of music so much.

What are some of your hobbies?
I like making soup. No, I’m not kidding.

I was in Lithuania for 5 weeks in 2007. All of the meals we ate were cooked with farm-fresh food in woodfire ovens. I could not believe how good their soup was. I came home and started dabbling in soup-istry.

(Since language is not meant to be static I submit that ‘soup-istry’ be entered into our modern lexicon.)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I see myself as a more mature, more successful, more skillful and wiser version of who I am today.

I desire to build a career as a singer/songwriter who brings joy, hope, laughter, beauty and truth to many people.

Ultimately, I’m more interested in who I become than where I end up. I want to be far more wise, educated, thoughtful, kind, skillful, loving, integral and self-sacrificial.

Character is more important than accomplishment.

What are the top books that have most influenced your life?
Surprised by Hope (N.T. Wright)

Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith & Art (Madeleine L’Engle)

War & Peace/Anna Karenina (Leo Tolstoy)

East of Eden (John Steinbeck)

The Complete Stories of Flannery O’Connor

Mere Christianity (C.S. Lewis)

I find the Old & New Testaments fascinating.

What do you value most in people? friends?
I appreciate thoughtfulness, wisdom, courage, intelligence, maturity, authenticity, an appreciation of beauty and integrity. I also love wit and humor.

I love people who sharpen me, and I tend to gravitate to artists, philosophers, comedic people and theologians.
